MUFAs - beautiful, tasty fats!

Recommended Posts

I love olive oils and try different ones all the time. A recent great discovery is the brand California Olive Ranch. I read about a bunch of awards they had received & I was thrilled to find it at my local grocery store. Each bottle includes a harvest date, and the pressing technique they use is exceptional. I've never been much into avocados, but now I'm going to work on that. Thanks so much for this post!

@Fiddleman

I prefer getting my nutrients from quality food where possible' date=' but agree that supplements can assist when we need to intensify our intake, or when access to quality nutrients is challenged. I do not take any supplements regularly though do at times where I need to.

Omega 3, while an essential unsaturated fat, is a poly unsaturated rather than a mono unsaturated :-)[/quote']

You are right. And I was also wrong about what the Omega 3 is sourced from. It is not sourced from avocados, but is sourced from sardines, herrings and anchovies. Regardless, it has worked out really well.

I try and eat nuts like almonds every day but yep they are pricy in the calories! I have always loved nuts and eat regularly to help get healthy fats:)

I can't order anything, internet is tricky, have to rely on care packages for everything. I do have a few hoarded tins of sardines which I love, and there is occasionally tuna but too much tuna makes me break out. My daily food options consist of maybe some chicken, eggs, "steak", some over-boiled vegetables, some raw veggies like carrots and cucumbers and onions, and some raw fruit like plums, kiwis and oranges. Everything else is fried, breaded, super high fat/salt/sugar. I brought several boxes of Quest bars but I have to ration those out because they are so high in carbs.

Please let me know what you would like in a care package and where it should be sent to.

Some ideas:

Low carb Protein bars (pure Protein, nu go slim, or whatever you prefer)

Fish oil (good quality)

snack food like beef Jerky or ostrich Jerky ( a personal favorite as high protein)

A freezer pak ( not sure you have the ability to freeze things, but this pak keeps your daily meats safe to eat in hot weather)

Protein powder (what do you like? - would arrive as sealed bag, not tub)

A good quality multi Vitamin for athletes

This is just a brain dump of suggestions. Do let me know what would help you the most.

I am sure others would also feel that they could send something too.

Oh my God, Fiddleman, I could cry! That would be a dream package!! All of that sounds so awesome, yes yes yes please!!

A lot of protein powders make me break out so I try to find gluten free-hormone free, no casein, etc. Tera's whey is decent.

No refridgerator sadly, would very much like to try the green drinks we've been discussing.

Also, sardines are awesome!

I will PM you my APO addy. <3 <3!!!!

Most of the carbs in Quest bars are Fiber, so they have low net carbs. Maybe you can get more of those?

Oh I have plenty of those, I have 3 full boxes! But I cannot live on Quest bars alone, tasty as they are, and I have to make those 3 boxes last me 10 months.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
