6 days post-op and struggling with fluid and protein

Recommended Posts

I am desperately reaching out for help here. I was sleeved on May 8th and I am struggling bigtime. I can't get all of my fluids and Protein in. The fist few days home, I called the surgeons office everyday and they told me that I was having a hard time swallowing because I was still swollen. The swelling has gone down and I can now swallow okay but I can barely drink clear fluids let alone protein. I've only had about 3o oz of Water today and about 20 oz of protein. I don't know what else to do. Everything I try to drink makes me full and sick to my stomach. I had REALLY bad diarreah and the surgeons office told me to add a small amount of cream of wheat with mashed bananas to bind me up and it worked but I still can't get my fluids in. I'm really starting to feel light headed, dizzy, sick to my stomach and I fear that I am dehyderating. Any suggestions? I pray that this will get better soon.

I am sorry you are having such a hard time. I had my revision on May 6th and I am not having any of those problems so please keep your Dr. informed. It is important to try and get your liquids in before the Protein this early on so try to find something you like and sip sip sip. I had to drink apple juice 100% natural because Water wasn't gong down well. I also drank herbal Decaf tea. Good prayers are coming your way.

Try putting some crystal light in you Water, this helped me some, water was very heavy to me. You might try skim milk, that worked for me as well. My doctor said not to worry about the Protein in the beginning that would come in time. I started getting all of my liquids in at about a month out. Good luck.

Try Decaf teas. Let it cool so it's luke-warm. I also liked Sobe Water. Concentrate on getting the fluids first right now. Staying hydrated is of primary importance. Hope it starts getting easier for you soon.

sugar free Powerade, sugar free popcicles, weak tea, crystal light, mio etc. all might help. remember to just sip too.

Great advice everyone. It sounds like I need to focus more on myfluids and not as much on my Protein so much right now. I will try to make some adjustments and see how it goes. I guess I just expected to be better and back to work by now. When is or did everyone else go back to work???

Sip, sip, sip and walk, walk, walk. I'm a May 8th sleeve and after the second day things picked up for me. Try a different Protein, Crystal light lemonade or iced tea. This will pass soon...

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
