How much time off before returning to work?

Recommended Posts

Planned to take mimimum 4 weeks...I'm the same way....don't want to be bored at home...

I had my surgery May 7. I have a JP drain and my abdomen is stapled in 5 different spots. This stuff won't be out until 10 days post-op. Not sure how others go back to work so soon?

I want to make sure I'm fully healed and have the eating/drinking schedule organized so I stay on track when I go back to my busy job.

I went back in 4 days. It really all depends on how surgery goes, how your body heals, and the type of work you do. I think you should put in for the time they will allow and then play it by ear.

So, for those of you "choosing" when you go back, or how long you need off, ultimately isn't it up to your doctor? I mean, I have never had a major surgery, but don't they typically tell YOU when you should/can go back to work?

The surgeon gives you a time frame, but they don't make it mandatory because every patient is different. My surgeon said 3-4 weeks and at first I planned on 2 weeks and he said that would be doable. For some stupid reason I decided since my surgery was on a Wednesday that I would take that end of the week and be off for a full week after. It wasn't enough time. I ended up having to do half days my first week back. You're better off taking longer than you might need because you can always return to work sooner.

I took 2 weeks. I would have definitely taken 4 looking back. It was painful, I struggled getting my food and Water in-barely got 24 ounces in daily.

5 days for me, but I have a desk job and can take it very easy. I also didn't a drain, etc. Like other people have said, this one is very individual.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
