Hi Everyone,

I took my Options classes in Palmdale, but I am having my surgery at Kaiser WLA. I will see Dr. Um on 7/25/13. Hopefully, everything will be fine for them to schedule my surgery soon. How many days did any of you do the liquid diet before surgery? How quickly did Kaiser schedule your surgery after you meet with the surgeon.? Also how many days did any of you stay in the hospital? I am excited and a little anxiety regarding the surgery.

Hello everyone. Just to let you know; today I meet with the surgeon so I will get my date. I am super excited. I have my list of questions for him. I am meeting with Dr Kim. My appointment is at 2pm. I am curious to find out how soon my new life will begin. I have been praying for this day it seems like forever. I have so much excitement, it is so hard to contain it while I am at work today until I leave for my appointment. I know I will be bouncing off the walls today and gleaming with heavenly joy.

We have the same surgeon! Dr. Kim is really nice and very informative... He had reviews my medical history before coming into the room so he didn't ask too many questions like other doctors normally do lol he came in like he already knew me which made me feel at ease... (I also thought he was extremely handsome, just an FYI)

After you meet with him they'll schedule you for a pre op with him & then with the anasteziologist (sp?) on the same day in about a week or so.... He'll have you take some final labs too... I believe his first available appts start mid-end October.I'm scheduled for Oct 11th :)

Good luck!! :)

Dr Kim doesn't require any liquid diet, just no eating or drinking after midnight the day before surgery. My consult with dr Kim was at 8am they called me the same day around 2pm to schedule me in :) I'm scheduled for Oct 10th, I'm not too worried about staying extra in the hospital... I'm afraid of being in pain at home lol

I would like to thank every who commented on about Dr. Kim. He definitely lived up to everything everyone said about him. He was very polite, patient, answered all of my questions, explained everything in detailed, he reviewed my chart prior to seeing me like someone said so that really made me feel good. He asked questions that no other surgeon has ever asked me. That made me feel like he really knew his stuff. It really made me feel at ease with him.

I have to admit, I was skeptical of getting him at first cause I tend to do background checks on doctors that are going to be performing some kind of medical evasive procedure on me. When I started the options program, I looked up all of the surgeons' licenses to make sure they were valid and had no malpractice or no infractions on their records. Everyone else came back clean except for him. So when I found out I had him, I prayed and asked God to show me why he was given to me. He was given to me cause of my hesistance and he was testing my faith in him. With that being said, God is an awesome God and so is Dr. Kim from what I saw and heard when I met with him yesterday.

My date is 10/22/13. My pre op appointment is on the 16th. The one thing I loved about him is that he said he was going to clean up the previous scar tissue that I had from previous surgeries and if I had any hernias or anything else, it would be taken care at the same time. The question he asked that no other surgeon asked was about if I had a history of any degenerative diseases. I was shocked that he asked that. I had that as one of my questions to ask him and he answered the question before I asked him. I thought that was awesome.

I believe mine took a little longer cause my case manager sent my referral to the wrong department. I decided to follow up and got things moving. Sometimes you have to be your own advocate to make sure everything is moving according to plan.

How far are you in your classes?

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
