3 Day Pre-op Liquid Diet - The Secret is Better than Bouillon!

Recommended Posts

My surgery is Thursday so I started my 3 day clear liquid diet today.

It started out ok. When I woke up, I drunk the bottled laxative and had a bottle of Water. A couple of hours later I had a SF strawberry-orange Jello cup. A few hours after that I had a SF pineapple popsicle. That's when all heck broke lose in my head. I normally eat around 12:30 pm or around 5:30 pm. At 5:30 pm, a popsicle was not cutting it. I was thinking of Chili's or S&S Cafeteria but looking at Jello and tea. The hungrier I got, the madder I got. Then I thought about all the people whose doctors don't even require them to do a pre-op diet and I really got mad. Suffering for the sake of suffering does not go over well with me.

Thank GOD, I remembered I bought some chicken bouillon at Costco's. I bought the organic Better than Bouillon chicken base and beef base. I didn't think chicken broth would help but I went and heated up some Water anyway. Ya'll, it was awesome. The sun came out, birds started singing, and rainbows filled the sky. It was clear, it was hot, and it was DELICIOUS! The label states it has chicken meat and broth so maybe that's why it's so good. Whatever the reason, thanks to the geniuses at Superior Touch, I just might make it 72 hours to have my surgery on Thursday.

So I'm spreading the word - BUY ORGANIC BETTER THAN BOUILLON CHICKEN BASE! I know there are a lot of cooks on here but I'm not one. I don't cook. I haven't used my stove in years. I mainly use the kitchen for the refrigerator - my sodas and leftovers are in there. I also use the glasses if I buy a 2 liter soda. So for me, even heating up water to dissolve chicken base is a big deal. It's out of my comfort zone. But I did it. I'm making tiny changes and they're sticking. I'm going to have another cup of broth in an hour and after that another popsicle. After that it'll be my bed time and I'll have one day down.

OMGoodness Cerenatee, you really made me burst out laughing with the "birds came out & birds were singing" comment!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!!!! Thank you for the good belly laugh! Anyway, please tell me where you found that! I know you said costco but what aisle was it in? What was down the same aisle as I can't even picture bouillon being sold there?

Another friend of mine from this forum shared her homemade chicken Soup recipe & now I'm embarrassed to say that I've NEVER made a homemade Soup (except for my Mom's Asparagus soup but I learned that when I was little). I'm not normally a soup eater, so I never bothered to learn but her recipe sounds good. I just don't have a pot as big as the one she recommends. Considering I'll be the only one eating it, I think it would be far less trouble if I end up liking a bouillon instead. No clean up either really.

So I've heard some docs require 2 weeks liquid diet prior to surgery & my current surgeon requires 1 week liquid diet & another doc which I'm considering as well, requires 1 week of 4 Protein drinks & a regular dinner each day. Crazy how they all differ so much!

Good luck to you & also Sabrina on your Thursday surgery!

Being the lifetime dieter, I can definitely eat just about anything if need be, regarding diet food but I feel your pain..except I am jelly of you cuz you only have a three day diet..I wish those birds would sing when I had to eat and/or drink some of the things I have to ingest. But I can always be the ultimate optimist since I can actually eat some of my food.

If I'm remembering correctly, my hubby spotted the spice aisle, put 2 and 2 together, and that's where the bouillon bases were. Without him, I would have walked right by them. costco confuses the crap out of me.

A Lighter Me asks that their clients do a 2 week low carb diet - 2 or 3 Protein shakes a day and 1 meal of salad and meat. Then 3 days before surgery you do a clear liquid diet.

The 2 week diet did not happen. I tried it. I couldn't do it. I moved on. I'm sticking to the 3 day liquid diet because it's the most important one to me. I need my body cleaned out and it'll give my liver a chance to shrink if my liver needs to shrink. My bmi is 38.9 so hopefully a big liver will not be an issue. If it is, it just is. If I could stick to a low carb diet for 2 weeks, I wouldn't need the surgery.

Amen sister! Like you, if I could diet, I wouldn't need to have my stomach ripped out of me!

Thanks for the tip on where to find the bouillon! Makes sense...I had completely forgotten that aisle! Thank your husband too! ;)

I go Thursday too. My sweet little Italian mother has made me homemade chicken and beef broth. It has been a life saver. Also to add a little spice I have Knorrs Calde de Tomatoe. It is a great Tomato bouillon with a little kick. High in sodium but I'm not drinking it everyday.

Has anyone tried the chicken Soup for the Soul brand broths yet? I just found them in my local grocery, and they come in the boxes. They have a BBQ Beef flavor, and an Italian Chicken flavor. I bought them both to try during my 2 week pre-op that I start on Tuesday. I hope they're good. I also got Swanson's box of Hot & Sour flavored broth. I think they also do a Mexican Tortilla infused broth and I Thai Ginger infused broth. Thought I'd throw that out there for anybody else struggling with getting bored by the plain old broths. :) Good luck everyone!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
