protein shake issue! please help!

Recommended Posts

I am 5 days post op. I have tried 4 different Protein Shakes and every single one has me in the bathroom popping. I am lactose intolerant and purposely picked shakes that are lactose and diary free, but I cannot find one that agrees with me. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

I use a very basic whey Protein powder. I get it from Nutrition World, it's called "Simply Whey." I don't think it has any lactose in it? It's just the powder, so you can add it to Water, soy milk, whatever would work for you.

I don't like the pre-made Protein drinks. Too many additives, artificial flavors, artificial sweetners (which make me go poop!), etc.

Could you be drinking them too fast? Try slowing down and see if that helps. Can you keep broth down? How about the Unjury chicken Soup?

I'm 6 days out and poop all the time!! So sick of it. I don't think it has anything to do with the shakes. I think it's just your body getting use to the change. I actually didn't make it to the commode today and my husband is wondering if this is normal and when will it stop. Lol. I'm saying body changing if not I better buy some depends :)

I'm so glad it's not just be. I had IBS before the surgery and I am praying this surgery helps with that.

If you're close out from surgery it's safe to say liquid in liquid out. It could be that the shake is fine but your body hasn't had anything solid so you go more often. Things will slow once you get

Into solids.

If they are lactose and dairy free, what is the fat content. I tried the Atkins as my first Protein post-op because I knew I liked them, but initially it was the fat content that sent me to the BR. After that I stuck to Premiere Protein Shakes. But as someone mentioned try a powder with Water.< /p>

Try nectar vanilla bean from Syntrax. Go on bariatricpantry.com. I had the same problem and this Protein helped me. They have many flavors. Ive tried vanilla, cappuciono, and chocolate so far and I love it. Its pretty expensive but worth it. Also one scoop has 23 grams of protein and if u mix it with one cup of skim milk that's a total of 34 grams of protein in one cup. I use farmland skim milk. Good luck its hard to find a Protein Shake that you like in the beginning.

Could it be the artificial sweeteners in them? I'm preop and have been working with my nut to find options for me as aspartame and other artificial sweeteners make me poop

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
