Do smells bother anyone after surgery?

Recommended Posts

Is it normal to be bothered by some smells and be very sensitive to smell after surgery or am I the only one?

You're not alone. There was a carry in where I work Friday. Lots of crock pots going. The smells were overwhelming. I don't know if it bothered me because I couldn't partake....but I couldn't eat lunch in the same room. It was almost nauseating.

I feel nauseated from the smells myself....it's really bad and I don't know how to stop it.

I thought it was just me. My sense of smell has increased significantly. Some smells really bother me now.....like bacon cooking or steamed shrimp.

My daughter had a doughnut yesterday in the car. It was so overwhelmingly sweet smelling I had to roll down the window.

I am almost 8 weeks out and was so surprised. It hadnt happened before.

Right after surgery, my sense of smell was just like it was when I was pregnant, and I'm too old for that, lol. Now, 4.5 months later, it's still more sensitive than before surgery. In fact, I thought the ground turkey I was cooking was bad, so I pitched it and went and got more...and the new stuff smells the same, but I know it's not bad.

No kidding?? I wonder why our sense of smell changes? Just like MichiganChic, I too had a very sensitive sense of smell when I was pregnant but no other time. I guess something to look forward to...or not ??!!! Then again, I have heard that things taste different too. Things you used to love to eat are no longer appealing? Strange??

I find this topic really interesting because I do not have much of a sense of smell. I had a nasal pollypectomy when I was a teenager and after I could smell perfume faintly if I hug someone, but I am unable to smell baked goods while in the oven or even if someone has gas (ok you know what I mean and my husband loves it that I can't smell his gas..lol) I am pre surgery and I will let you know if it increases. I personally would love to smell a candle burning or my moms homemade bread baking in the oven or even get a little grossed out from the human smells. :)

I'm a caregiver working in a client home before surgery I couldn't tell the family had dogs and cats that have sinced past years ago, after I came back the minute I walked through that door it hit me and I swear the smell gets worse everytime I come to work.

It's normal for the first few months. So are food aversions. It should get better after a few months according to my surgeon.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
