I have had a diet soda. Its on my list of things that are ok. Do i drink a bottle? No. I bought a 20 oz and then had a sip or 2 over 6 days. I just wanted something different. I found its not very comfortable to drink very much at a time for me. I also used to be a 2 liter a day drinker of diet soda. I do not want to start that habit again. But thats my experience. It may not be yours.

I have moved on to a sparkling Water from safeway that is 0 everything and yummy!

I was told the exact same thing... make the soda or beer go flat and then you can drink it. BUT..... WHY would we want to drink something that is flat?

Speaking for myself only here....Not sleeved yet, however, I gotta say...I love the taste of caffeine free diet coke, cold, room temp, fizzy, flat, in a can, in a bottle, first thing in the morning to swallow my pills, last thing at night to wet my throat. The coke I crack before I go to bed, sits on my bedside table and if there is coke left in it when I get up, I drink it. You speak of 12 step meetings: I know many and addict (name the drug) that can sit in a bar all night and maintain sobriety but gets triggered when they drive down a certain street past a certain liquor store, I know addicts that manage to learn moderation, and I know addicts that use harm reduction to try to minimize the damage their behavior may cause. Everyone has a different level of functioning and a different way of coping. Total abstinence doesn't work for everyone, just like moderation doesn't work for everyone. We are individuals, not a bunch of carbon copy Cookies. Ultimately, we all have to make our own choice. After surgery, I may drink a diet coke again and I may not. At 60 years old, I'm pretty sure I am far enough down the road of life to answer only to myself. A behavior is only pathological if it causes a problem with functioning, IMHO...

Why go through so much just to fall back into your old habits? I am not trying to judge just being honest. There are so many people who would love to has this tool or change in life but unfortunately they were decline by the insurance company and can't afford it and I know would do anything to have this opportunity. You were very blessed. Using this second chance wisely.

Any time you want to. Same for eating brownies and ice cream' date=' potato chips, any other junk. You can also stop exercising any time you want. Really, you can pick up any "bad" habit you might have given up for this surgery at any time you want.

Does that sound preachy? It's NOT meant to be. It's just a fact. YOU choose. I could say "Listen to the advice of your doctor," but really, if you're looking for people to say "Well, I did it and I'm fine," you're looking for a reason/excuse to return to something you quit doing for FOUR months.

So the real question, I think, is WHY? If it's GOOD for you, why'd you give it up for 4 months? You gave it up because it's NOT good for you, no matter how you try to rationalize it. Are you craving it? Perhaps, but do you really want to give in to that craving?

I say this from a "been there, done that" place. When I was first banded, I lost 85 lbs. Gave up sweet tea and almost all sugars, junk, etc. But little by little, I brought those things BACK into my life. Now? I'm 25-30 lbs heavier and need the sleeve to try to get my weight back down. I honestly wish I'd never started with the bad habits...

So that's my advice to you. You have FOUR months of not drinking useless calories...why not try to make it 5 months...or more?[/quote']

Amen! Amen! Amen!!!

I am 4 months post op and I would love a drink of cold soda anyone tried soda yet?

I know you didnt ask this question to be preached at - which will undoubtedly happen.

Im five months out. I have one every week or two - nothing like I did pre-op.

started at four months out.

I had a slurpee the other day. I loved slurpee pre-op and now that they have sugar free ones, I thought I was in the clear. WELL, I'm not. I only had a few sips and then my stomach starting hurting. Apparently, slurpees have carbonation in it.

SO... for all of you slurpee lovers watch out for this one.

I love my diet coke. I did give it up preop and was ready to give it up forever. At first I just tried a sip or two of a flat diet coke. It didn't taste so good. I thought good, I don't miss it. About 4 month out I put a opened one in the fridge and let it sit till the next day . It was wonderful. I had been reading how many doctors are saying carbonation can't stretch your stomach, and the stretchy part has been cut out.... Ect. So for a treat once a day I get a fountain DIET coke and drink it. My stomach is no bigger than when I started and I have no problems. Just giving my experience on diet coke.

Is this a SERIOUS question???!!!! I'm three years out and I knew PRIOR to surgery that cokes.....carbonated drinks, were the ONE thing I was not EVER suppose to do. Someone else asked you and I didn't take the time to see if you responded, but why would you WANT to. There is NOTHING about a soft drink, regular or diet, that is good for you.

Im pretty sure it was or she wouldnt have wasted her time asking it.

Im pretty sure she knows the rules, but was curious about others experiences. No reason to jump down her throat. If you dont have an experience then not much reason to post?

Why wouldn't it be a serious question. Many of us drink soda occasionally and do so with the blessing of our doctors, I knew ahead of time that drinking soda was not allowed during the first six weeks and that after that it was just an issue of my comfort if I wanted to have some or not. I only know because I ASKED for clarification prior to surgery.. Some people may not ask prior to surgery because they have more important things on their minds to ask their doctors. You're right soda has no nutritional value, but I do enjoy an occasional diet soda. I don't drink crystal light either as it has no nutritional value and artificial sweetener either.. but occasionally I indulge. Giving up soda is great if that's what you want to do.. but for MANY of us our doctors do not believe that carbonation will stretch your sleeve and as long as it doesn't make us gassy, we are allowed it.

Then by all means, drink a coke.

I never asked prior to surgery, I also didn't ask about anything else specific to what I can or cannot or should and should not have post op. It was laid out there, said without anyone asking about soft drinks.....at the seminar. I have to pause for a minute and try and IMAGINE any reputable doctor giving their "blessing" - but stranger things have happened, I suppose. "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should" 'Nuff said

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
