Insulin pumping and gastric sleeve surgery

Recommended Posts

I am a type II insulin requiring diabetic and I will be having surgery at the end of May or early June. Are there any insulin pumpers out there that can give me some advise as to how to control my blood sugar after surgery and eating so little food. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Mark, Edmond Ok

Talk to your endo. You won't be having many carbs but you can still bolus if you need to and dose for your carbs. I bet you won't need much and you may have hypo episodes while you are coming to grips with it. You may end up off insulin over time. Lots of type 2 basically leave the hospital in remission. I'm not on insulin but I'm on metformin and fully expect to be able to get off it. My latest A1C was 5.6.

Thanks for the speedy reply. Almost 15 years ago, before the pump, I worked out 4 days a week and lost 65 pounds. I felt fantastic and was almost down to a 34 slack. It was then when my endochronologist put me on insulin. My A1C just kept climbing. After doing insulin via multiple daily injections I decided on going on the pump. It have spoken with my doctor yesterday. he truly thinks that if I stay on the pump, my basal dosage alone will maintain my blood glucose level with a bolus. the only carbs I will be injesting will be from vegetables and fruit that I eat. Let's keep our fingers crossed and maybe, just maybe I can get off the pump entirely.

Yes insulin makes you gain weight. That's why most type 2 are fat, because we get resistant to insulin and our bodies have to keep pumping out more. It's like we are on insulin pumps too! I hope you can get off it. Even if not, you will be so much better off lighter.

I was on 2000 mg of metformin and 45 mg of Actos daily. My surgeon took me off all diabetic meds when I left the hospital, and my fasting blood sugars have been a good 20 points lower than when I was on the meds. I'll have my first A1C since my February surgery in a couple of weeks at my regular checkup - I can't wait to see how it is!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
