Vacationing after surgery

Recommended Posts

My surgery date is May 6th and I will be going on vacation the first week in July. I will have approximately 8 weeks recovery time. I'm going to the beach with my family, wondering what restrictions there may be and what my nutrition program will be?????

You will be just be getting on to normal foods and finding out what you are ready for. Just a word of caution, most people have a set time for "liquids then soft foods then regular foods, but you will have to take it as your body is ready for it. For example, some people can eat a hamburger at 3 weeks and some don't seem to tolerate it till 12 or so. You should be in a place though, where you will be able to go to a restaurant and find something you can eat at that point.

Bonus: You will also be much more comfortable in a bathing suit! Yay!

Under my surgeons schedule you would be just transitioning to soft foods. I also went to the beach after my surgery at about the same distance out. One blessing is that seafood is mostly soft! I ate a lot of fish and crablegs! is also a chance to relearn how to vacation... there was a gym in our condo so I continued to work out every day and walked a couple miles on the beach every day. There is a free app you can get for your phone that is a GPS pedometer that tracks how far you walk. I ended up losing 4 pounds on vacation and I feel like I have changed all future vacation expectations! Have fun and good luck!

I'd ask my surgical team. We can only go by what our surgical team told us.

I'm in the same boat. I had my surgery on March 25 and I'm going to Cabo at the end of May for 10 days. My instructions state that I will start a regular diet about 2 weeks before I go, so I'm thankful that I will be able to experiment with some stuff before leaving. My biggest concern is that these trips always revolve around eating and drinking (and this trip also includes a rehearsal dinner and wedding) and only my husband knows I've had the surgery. I need to double check with my doctor, but I'm hoping that I'll be able to go in the Water by then - it's going to be HOT! I seem to remember reading to not swim or go in hot tubs for 6 weeks. I'm already looking forward to being so much more comfortable during the plane ride and in my clothes. Good luck to you!

I was sleeved on April 3 and leaving for a cruise on June 1. I will be on regular foods by then but am taking Protein Shakes (with a note that my doctor is writing) to make sure I am still meeting my Protein needs. And the gym on the boat is great. It is a whole new mind set to vacation not being completely about the eating/drinking. Soooo excited.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
