I am so excited...already my food cravings are gone. Surprisingling I'm enjoying the liquid diet. Since surgery 4 days ago, I've been drinking milk, sf hot cocoa, protien powder, watered down pudding, and creamy Tomato Soup. I wanted something more today so I made cream of wheat very runny with milk so I could drink it though a straw. It tasted so yummy! and I didn't have an problems keeping it down. Do you think it is okay to eat cream of wheat in the liquid stage? It does have some texture to it so I'm just a little afraid that it might be too strong this early in the healing process? I want my stomach/band to heal as best as possible. For all of you long time bandsters, I am curious as to what you say about Cream of Wheat??

Thanks!!!!

I really am not trying to burst your excitement but you're experiencing something pretty common. I completely lost my appetite for about the first two weeks following surgery, but it comes back. You need to be prepared for this because I thought "Yippee, I'll never be hungry again." and when I started to feel hunger again it was pretty rough because I was still on mushies and I felt like I must've messed up and actually felt bad about getting hungry again. (It was a weird transition for me.) Anyway, enjoy this honeymoon stage but that's all it is for most of us. Like I said, I'm not trying to be a Debbie Downer but I just don't want you to go through the same thing I did.

As far as Cream of Wheat. It was a no-no for liquids but was OK for mushies.

Good luck and Happy Healing!

Wow, the information about the appetite returning is kind of a bummer. I'm trying not to over think things right now. I just live in the moment of now, and try not to worry too much about the future. Thanks for the info on the cream of wheat.

ohh those hunger pains...i remember it acutely...it is so much easier when you can eat solids again but hang in there this is only 4 weeks compared to the rest of your life and it is so worth it!

My doctor had me eating whatever could fit through a straw. So if you can get the cream of wheat into that liquid state you should be fine.

At one of my sermiars, the nurse cautioned us to avoid using a straw because it can introduce air into the stomach when you swallow. Apparently, that can cause discomfort in your stomach. I'm glad that hasn't happened to you! :biggrin1:

I'm not sure about the Cream of Wheat. My diet says only Clear Liquids for 2 weeks, then soft or pureed food at a rate of about 2 ounces per meal for the next 2-4 weeks. High Protein foods are listed as the priority, then we can have other foods. They also said to drink 15-30 minutes before or 30-45 minutes after meals, but not with meals.

That's all I know so far from the materials I've gotten prior to my 12/19/06 surgery date!

Hello I am a week post-op but was concerned about your post. I have a notebook that was given to me pre-op with foods we can and cannot have.

First in the liquid stage the food must liquify upon body temperature, i.e., Jello, pudding, yogurt, etc. and all must be sugar free. Tomato Soup is a no-no because of the sugar content. Also a straw shouldn't be used for at least 6mths post-op. from what I have been told is that it can cause gastric problems.

Just trying to advise you and be helpfull, wouldn't want to see you getting sick or doing damage.

HI, I am also day 4 post-op! I too had cream of wheat this am, isnt' that funny! I couldn't take the hunger pains anymore. They woke me up at 3 and 530 am they were so bad. I thinnned the cream of wheat (ate it at 730a) and added Splenda and a teensy bit of butter. It was good, and I had no issues. And it's now 915am and I'm not feeling hungry at all. No vomiting or nausea so far, so even though it's not on my list til the pureed stage, next week, I ate it and it's fine.

My surgeon said you will have no physical hunger the first week. But watch out for the head hunger.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
