This is the second time in the last week that this has happened. I start feeling pain directly below my sternum (and behind the lower portion of it). In a matter of one to two minutes, it becomes so severe that it is difficult to breath, I can't get comfortable, I start sweating, and the pain feels like it branches out (like tree limbs) from that area to my abdomen and to my back. It literally feels like someone has stabbed me and is pulling my insides out. There is pressure near the stomach and sternum and feels like my upper back is breaking. I know this sounds dramatic but I am 100% serious. The first time it happened (about a week ago) it went on for over 30 minutes before I had my husband go get some gas x, by the time he got back, I had taken a phenergan (anti-nausea) and a Vicodin I had left from my hand surgey. When he got back, about 30 minutes later, it ha started to ease up (or it could have been the above mentioned meds??). I went ahead and took two gas x and laid down. Tonight, I felt it coming on an in less than 5 minutes it was so severe I had to have him look for the gas x. About 10 minutes went by and the pain continued to get worse so I had him take me to the er, about half way there the pain started easing up so I made him turn around.

So, my conclusion is it is gas but from what??? I hadn't eaten in about 4 hours but I had just had a Protein Shake. I have two of these a day and never have a problem with them. I don't know if I had had a shake before the incident a week ago, but I do know that I hadn't eaten for at least an hour before, maybe longer.

If anyone knows what is going on or has ANY ideas, please let me know. I saw my surgeon last week for my 3 month post op and told him about it and he said it could be that I didn't chew my food well enough, but I didn't have a lot of details to give him and didn't think much about it.

It could be a gall bladder attack. do you have your gall bladder?

A lot of people have to have their gall bladder out after WLS.

No, but in the beginning gall bladder attacks don't last very long until your gall bladder gets worse. then the pain will not let up.

This happened to me a week ago Saturday and I spent a little time in the Urgent Care, getting IV pain meds and X-rays. Then an hour or two later - I was back to normal!

Gallbladder pain is horrible, it feels like you are having a heart attack. I would go and have an ultrasound of your gallbladder just to be sure. Also, if you press down right under your ribs on the right side of your body, if it is tender then it is most likely gallbladder! I had mine removed 3 years ago and what you are describing sounds similar to what I went through. Horrible back and chest pain!! I thought I was having a heart attack! This is especially common in women around the age of 30 who have recently lost weight.

Gall bladder pain hurt worse than labor. And it only got worse. I'd suggest seeing a doc for an ultrasound.

He did say that could be it, but at the time I had only had one attack. He did order an ultrasound and that was it. As soon as he got the results he said I needed to get it out. He's a really great doctor. It was just difficult because I moved out of state after that first attack. But he answered every email within minutes. He's pretty great.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
