Anybody regretted it, even with no complications?

Yikes most of these replies have scared the hell out of me. Thanks for your honesty it's what I needed to hear if I pass this on to my husband he will say no don't do it and I've only just convinced him how much I need it!

Please note that most, but not all, of the posted regrets are about not being able to eat whatever/whenever which is why we have the surgery to begin with.

Am I the only one that sometimes wonders if this forum should be renamed Peyton Place?

Who did your surgery? Where? I read about someone else on here who also felt no restriction and was always hungry - and when another surgeon checked them out, nearly their entire original stomach had been left intact. They had it revised and are having great success with it now.

Wow! Chris! Not to get off subject with this thread but a big WOW to you on you success thus far! I noticed your ticker and looked at your profile.

Way to go girl! Way to go! :)

Iam 3 weeks out and love the results so far the only thing that is in the back of my head is beer. I am not a bigg drinker but I do like to have a occasional beer now and than especially in the summer. It sounds dumb but for some reason it is the only thing I think that bothers me. Iam down 40 lbs so far and I am pretty sure that are grocery bill is less than before. Woooohoooo.

I I think that the people that regret it the most are the ones that were not ready to do it yet either mentally or physically .

I was waking up with severe pain depressed no energy . A lot of my pain is still there but everything else seems to be good.

Make sure you doit for the rite reason . If your not mentally ready please wait because you will regret it.

I think there is a growing trend of people who regret this surgery, why? I don't know, I have a few theories but won't bother you all with them right now, but I do realize we need to let them speak their peace.. So others know exactly what they are signing up for.

Edit;

Oh I forgot to say, it is hard. It is a major surgery and a radical step to take, but I am very happy I did it!

It really was my last chance at a healthy life. :)

^5 on the beer swampdonkey! I don't want a beer but a margarita or some other delicious adult beverage would be awesome. Oh yeah - and some nachos to go with it.

I had this struggle before my surgery and I came to a realization that I really did not need all the food I was eating. This changed everything. I cut my portions in half and stuck with it. This was my new beginnings. I don't miss it and I still go out to eat all the time. I love my new sleeve and I have actually saved a lot of money by eating way less and I buy organic. I love this life style. :)

If I am being honest, I love my sleeve at a month out and am not missing the food but I would KILL for a frozen Margarita! Can do without the chips but that sweet, tangy, freeze brain of a concoction is something I miss!

I am saying this because I care... we are all in charge of our own "journey". The patient has a huge amount of influence in how this works out. Wildly successful, so-so, or whatever.

This is a good place to "vent" and I recognize much of this is just venting but i worry about nervous pre-ops getting the wrong idea - it is hard to let go of old ways. I was very ready to let go and yet i do recall those early months... feeling a little like the world wasn't as brightly colored. Feeling a little... I won't say blue... but certainly not technicolor bright like it is now! I accepted responsibility for making the choice to have the surgery AND because I listened to people who came before me, i knew it was temporary. The surgery did EXACTLY what was promised. I can eat less, and I am no longer hungry 24/7. Absolutely everything else - following guidelines, working out, working on my emotional challenges - that was all me. Here is the newsflash - really really soon after you heal from the surgery, you are pretty much on your own sisters and brothers. The surgeon has done his/her job, you better have a plan for the rest. Doesn't mean you need to write the plan, it means you need to find the resources, support, education etc.

If you seriously can't afford chicken, cottage cheese and greek yogurt and veggies to eat - i can't fathom why you are getting this surgery.

So, here I am in maintenance living a life I could only dream about before. I do sometimes struggle, but crap, that is real life - isn't it? I mean, I don't know ANYBODY - fat or thin who doesn't have some rough days. Get over it.

I am not as mean as I sound... I am just suggesting to anyone that wants to learn from this conversation thread that sleeve life is still life with all it's struggles. You still drive the bus - where are you heading?

When I go on vacation in June, I am definitely going to indulge in a SkinnyGirl margarita. Probably about the same calories as a lite Starbucks drink.

Oh, and more then a year out I do enjoy the occasional cocktail -especially "skinny" ones. I don't drink beer because it is heavy and carby and carbonated, but i am guessing that every once in awhile it will be just fine. IT would be better if you all waited till you get to goal though because those kind of "treats" add empty calories.

Do watch alcohol in the early months though. I had a few sips of wine about 4 months out at a big celebration and that sucker burned. I can have a little red now with no problem... but it was not pleasant early on and i don't recommend it.

The big risk with alcohol, even once you are at maintenance is that your body handles it differently. Be very very careful with it. I made a mistake of having a drink on an empty stomach (big mistake - I hadn't eaten in like 7 hours). I had to go to bed and sleep it off - luckily i was home - and i learned my lesson. I was shocked - I have never had that kind of thing happen to me before.

It takes time for things to get on track. Early weeks you feel all sorts of weird sensations - acid can feel like hunger, your stomach muscles aren't totally healed yet, their may be some nerve damage that is still healying and your body is still full of that hunger hormone. You can ACCIDENTLY overeat in those early weeks, my NUT had me eating by the scale, measuring cup and clock probably the first 8 weeks. It wasn't until I was fully recovered and on solid foods that the sleeve fully did it's job.

Just follow a sensible plan and give it time - i promise it does get better.

I was sleeved on 3/26 and its very hard it seems like they really did not take That much stomach just me because some times I still feel hungry. And it does not seem like I am losing I onow its been almost 3 weeks but I don't see it and the pain on my side is crazy hard to bend or do anything hurt so bad hate to put a bra on

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
