Anybody regretted it, even with no complications?

Recommended Posts

buplee' date=' I'm sure you didn't intend to insult...but just to be clear, people who have complications do not necessarily do so because they did something "wrong". Nor because they chose the wrong doctor, etc. Nor because they cheaped out and didn't go to a center of excellence....sometimes it is due to surgeon error, good surgeons screw up too. Sometimes it's just how their body reacted to the surgery.

I went to a surgeon who had excellent reviews, had seen people on this forum, was quite experienced, not the cheapest (very expensive actually) and who runs a "Center of Excellence". All that great thought and it nearly killed me.[/quote']

No, I did not mean to insult anyone. That was not might intent at all. Yes, some issues are due to surgeon error. However, I got a little ticked by people who regretted not being able to over eat, or were blaming others for their short comings. As I said at the beginning of my post, that I am not a mean person. Please read the rest of the post to see the areas I was addressing.

As I mentioned everyone has the right of free speech, but don't feel people should take their issues out on others.

Sorry if anyone takes offense or feels insulted.

I just wanted to clear it up hun. There are actually people who think that you can only get a leak by doing something wrong. We leak victims get a little sensitive about the subject :) I have to say I also hate reading that people think the COE is the cats meow...given I went to one LOL

You hit the hammer on the nail! Not sure if that's how it goes lol! I totally agree with you. I'm having surgery May 16th. I'm so excited about the change. I weighed out the pros and the cons. The pros out weighed my social food gatherings! Having this surgery is just a boost. After the surgeon does their job, you have to do yours. It's not a quick fix. No offense to anyone. I like this site for its honesty. No one should bash any one for their true feelings but it's also good to hear the true feed back.

My first instinct to the sleeve was staples really? Restriction alone didn't sell me. It was the reduction of the hunger hormone. But that didn't happen for me. I'm Really disappointed.

I don't think some people can hear what you're saying. It's obvious your surgery went wrong some how. Either your surgeon left your fundus or he left your stomach too big or something. Something is wrong. And if you could control your eating and not eat junk food, you wouldn't have needed the surgery.

I wish you the best. I hope you're able to get some help some kind of way. And there are a lot of complications with this surgery. I use to think it was 5% or less but I'm reading some studies that rank it as high as 20%. This surgery is not the answer for lots of people and we all need to keep that in mind when deciding whether to go forward or not.

Actually, I have heard around 50 percent of VSG patients still experience physical hunger. Ghrelin is also made in your brain and your pancreas and it also takes a while to dissipate once the fundus is removed. I am 11 weeks post-op and my physical hunger is just starting to dissipate (yay!). Still have some head hunger, but it's nice the physical hunger is diminishing. I don't think it will ever go away completely, though. I know others' experience is different--but I think it's important not to generalize. We all have our own journey and experiences and that doesn't mean that something went wrong with the surgery.

I wasn't generalizing. I said specifically something went wrong with his surgery - not anyone else's. I never thought a person would lose their hunger with this surgery. I researched that and I understand that you're still going to get hungry. However, the fundus secrets a large part of the ghrelin in your body and I said maybe his surgeon left too much of his. Specific. His surgeon.

I'm glad it worked out well for you though. It has to be a weight off your mind wondering if the surgery was going to work.

What I was trying to communicate is that just because someone has true physical hunger, it doesn't mean that something went wrong with the surgery. It is within the realm of normal and is not as uncommon as is sometimes believed. However, we can still resist the hunger through discipline and by eating the right things, and we also still feel restriction. I've honestly never wondered if the surgery was going to work. I knew that I would lose weight more slowly than others due to my body's metabolic efficiency (related in part to some endocrine issues and probably yo yo dieting), but I'm happy with it so far and have been since immediately post-op.

Wishing you all the best with your surgery...I'm sure that it will go great!

I'm going to briefly piggyback. My leak was a fluke. Not the surgeons error or mine, just an almost deadly random occurrence.

And to the OP, sorry if this is redundant. I had complications and for that, and the effect it has on me still, I regret this surgery. I don't regret the positive aspects. I know longer have dangerous drops in my blood sugar, my blood pressure is normal, and I've lost weight (albeit slowly.) I'm on the fence when it comes to the question "would I get it again?" I still vividly remember how scary the leak was. And of course the first place I lost weight was my butt. What tiny cushioning I had for my tailbone is gone so I sit on bone...or a super unsexy cushion that at least makes me sit a few inches taller in my car :) I vomit randomly from esophageal spasms, and I still am not even close to having my strength back to normal. My godson is a year old and I can barely hold him standing up. I researched my surgery years before I even pursued it with my insurance company. I was completely confident in my knowledge of physical and mental changes.

I have no intention of scaring you. I want to remind you that ANYONE can get a leak. I followed the rules to a T and still got one. It happens and it's awful.

But when it comes to people regretting this with no complications the numbers are growing. More people regret surgery now than when I joined this site. The surgery has also gained TONS of advertising. I would bet most people who regret their surgery and had no complications are those who didn't do enough research and/or saw this as a magic obesity cure. They see people who lost 100+ lbs and assume it was all the surgery. Not true. The sleeve helped but it was their dedication to a lifestyle change that made them lose so much and it didn't happen overnight. Or they've heard "I know so and so had it done and they look great!" This isn't cosmetic surgery and people think it is without researching. It's not a way to drop 30-40 lbs easily. It's a big commitment and more people are getting it without realizing that massive truth.

And don't count on the ghrelin thing. My sleeve itself is textbook now and I still get hungry. Some of us just still get that way. Now that I'm post op though, my hunger shows itself as nausea and not the previous growling sensation.

I'm only a little over a week out' date=' and I don't think I'll have any regrets. What I am struggling with, though, is to try to understand why I couldn't do it without the surgery? I'm pretty disappointed in myself....why couldn't I exercise? Or limit my portions? Or drive by a fast food joint and not go through the drive through?

I'm confident that after 6 months I'll be able to have a little of anything, so I'm not really mourning food or the rediculous huge portions I had before. But I'm just disappointed in myself for having to have chosen surgery.

I agree with you I'm on the end of my second week. I do have days where I dwell on the fact that I can't eat, but at the same time it upsets me more that I wasn't disciplined before. I sit here and think if only I would have just watched what I ate and ate normal portions. If only I stopped eating when I felt satisfied and not when I was stuffed. I'm hoping it gets better because this journey has truly been difficult for me. Good luck to you as well.

I'm not quite six months out and can eat a little bit of anything with no problem. I will tell you I'm not as disappointed with myself as I was in the beginning but I HATE eating around people because the amount of food they ingest, the unhealthy choices, and the speed at which they shovel it in their mouths disgusts me and I'm sickened by the fact I used to do that. :/

I felt and do feel the same way but that feeling goes away when I am satisfied/full and it especially goes away when I step on the scale and see more progress in the past 3 months than I have had in the past 20 years. No regrets. Not a good way to live with regrets. Learn and move on.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
