Dr. Gerald Kirshenbaum - Considering Dr. Kirshenbaum

Jaime Happy Anniversary!

Dee I will forever relate to you as being uber large like I was. Something about having DOUBLE the amount to lose as the average losers can feel daunting.

I have a goal of wanting to become a grand cook. I love fresh flavors, ripe fruiits and quality meats. I want to learn how to cook like the some of the great ones on food Network and around the planet. Just to not be afraid of food is a goal.

As for eating calories at 2000 a day....I am wary of generalities. I'd rather work with a nutritionist, doctor, one on one and see the pattern that's happening with my digestive system and weight loss and gradually contour a diet plan for ME. What works for me may not work for another person.

I'm with you all on the band. Great tool to keep the feast beast at bay.

PANNICULECTOMY- Needless to say having insurance pay for this is not going to be an issue. My primary care physician said to let him know when I'm ready. I'm not ready. My back could not sustain the added pressure required while the front part of my body is healing.

Our goal is to get more weight off me. Build my core muscles so I can handle the added stress and then I'm going in for a lower body lift. This way they can cut up the hip line and deal with the back side and liposuction/remove lax skin/ pull in and contour my body like a well fitted dress. I'll wait.

The recovery time for these procedures is months. I really want a team who has done this before so I am having this done at the Cleveland Clinic. If it was just breast lift or augmentation I would go to a trusted plastic surgeon but at four hundred pounds there are other things besides stretched skin and fat that can happen. Like my hernias.

I still have to explore the repair of the hernias. I also learned through the hard way that just because someone says they have had experience with extreme morbidly obese WLS patients doesn't mean they have had successful experiences. Do background checks.

Lucky for us the web is full of places where you can see patient feedback. If you read long enough, search enough sites you can spot the difference between a pissed off patient and someone who had a very serious experience. I just went to a doctor I checked. The biggest complain people had was he didn't smile. So what. I went and learned he was a partner as well in a surgical center for WLS patients in Venice, Fl. IMAGINE! So here is a doctor who I went to for something not related to my band but gave me a more fine tuned medical plan because he did have that experience.

How long will this take? AS LONG AS IT TAKES and shorter than it took me to gain all the weight.

Everyone have a successful day whatever your daily goal may be.

Patty

Don't apologize. This is a tough tough thing. Our weight impacts every single aspect of our lives, including our work, our relationships, our health (of course), our self-esteem, our interaction with the physical world, and our interactions with every single person we meet. AND we are judged at every turn, discriminated against, and have traditionally been left behind when it comes to medical research. It's only been recently that science has moved past the "just eat less" mentality to focus on the unique characteristics of obese individuals.

As for all your bad choices . . . the thing you need to remember is that plenty of other people could have made those same choices and NOT ended up obese. Plenty of skinny folks make ABYSMAL food/eating choices. YOUR body and genes and brain are different though, so your choices lead to much different outcomes than someone else. So, yes, our choices played a role. But our physiology played (in my opinion) a much bigger role.

Okay, on a different note. When you posted about steel-cut oats yesterday, it made me really miss them. Last time I tried to eat them it just really raised my blood sugar. I'm on a "carb up" day today so I decided to try again. I've read about adding Protein Powder to your oatmeal but I didn't have any, so I cooked it with my Slimfast vanilla Protein Shake. It's really really good! Kinda' sweet, but not overly. I think this is gonna be a mainstay of my carb up days. I'll check my blood sugar later and make sure it's okay, of course.

Dee, I agree: don't apologize! And Mini is right about how others can make similarly poor food choices and not gain an ounce, but it doesn't mean they are any healthier.

Today is my 10wk bandiversary. As of today, I've lost about 16lbs. (15.6 - ok we're just gonna round up, hehe). That's an average of 1.6lbs per week, which is spot-on with what they said I should lose....1-2lbs per week.

YAY! I've never been SO happy to be AVERAGE in my life!

I think today was a good wake-up call for me. I went to see a doctor about this pesky cold. Yes ladies, the cold that I've had off and on since the week after surgery. While writing out my script, he asked how much I'd lost. I told him 16lbs and he asked how long since surgery, so I counted back...10wks today. That's when it hit me, like a sudden bulb over my head - I'm actually losing at the average speed you're supposed to lose. I've been feeling like a failure these last few weeks but now that I think about it, I'm doing pretty good!!! The doctor said so himself. 16lbs in just over 2mos is a really good pace. Much better pace than the fast drop that the Bypass patients have. Much healthier, he says.

Gosh, today is a good day!!! :sneaky:

Congrats, Jaime. Remember what Patty said, it took a long time to gain the weight, and it will take a while to lose it in a healthy manner.

To all you Biggest Loser watchers. Last night there was a commercial with Ali Vincent pushing a new Protein powder. Since I am always looking for a better tasting protein mix thought I would give it a try. Does anyone remember what the name of the product was. I thought I would be able to remember it and didn't write it down, but today I am suffering from CRS :sneaky:

What's CRS?

I love Greek yogurt! It's much thicker and therefore more filling, and it's so low calorie! Did you have the plain kind, or the kind with fruit? I like the plain kind with a teaspoon of low sugar strawberry jam mixed into it.

Also, a way to make extra thick and yummy Protein Shakes is to mix milk with Protein powder and about 4oz of plain greek yogurt, blend it in a blender with some ice.

CRS= Can't Remember S***.

A closely related disorder is CRAFT: Can't Remember a F****** Thing.

I got the plain. I'll try the sugar free jam with it. That sounds great. I hadn't thought of making a Protein Shake with it. Good idea!

HAHAHAAHH!!! CRAFT! I love it.

The recipe I've seen is Mocha Cheesecake Protein Shake, which is a scoop of any chocolate Protein powder, skim milk (maybe 10oz?), 4oz of the plain greek yogurt, a tablespoon of the SF Cheesecake flavored yogurt powder, and ice - all pureed/blended in a blender. Sounds fabulous to me, haha. But I've not tried it yet.

Yeah, I always warn my students at the beginning of the term that I suffer from CRAFT.

What is yogurt powder? I've never heard of that.

Sorry! I totally messed that up, I meant pudding mix.

You buy the Jello pudding mix that comes in a box. The SF Cheesecake flavor. That powder is the powder I'm referring to - sorry!!!

I was actually considering ordering some of the new Biggest Loser products. I am a die-hard fan of the show. I watch it every week, and cry during every episode at one point or another. My DH likes to make fun of me for it, haha. Let me know if you end up ordering any of it, tell me what you think of it. Or I'll just wait a month and see if I can find some reviews online.

I found it on drugstore.com for a little less, I will let you know what it is like, if you get some first let me know what you think. I watch every week too, I really admire them for all the ass whoopings they get, I hate to admit it but I don't think that I would be able to last the first week.

It would be nice if they would sell the BL Protein powders in little individual packets for cheap, so you could try it first and see if you like it. What happens if it tastes like chocolate flavored horse poo??

Oh and I definitely wouldn't last the first week! I'm as lazy as the come, and if Jillian got in my face like that, I'd seriously punch her. I just don't see how all that yelling they do can actually work. So, a little off topic but continuing with the Biggest Loser chat - do you think Bob is gay? I love him to death, but sometimes he strikes me as gay - which doesn't make a darn bit of difference to me, I'm just curious, haha. Any thoughts?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
