Dr. Gerald Kirshenbaum - Considering Dr. Kirshenbaum

Thanks so much for the advice. I really think that if I eat smaller bites and put my fork down, I will not pb and you are right. I DO eat things I shouldn't be eating with the band. ex: Pasta, rice, etc. I do think I need a small fill so that I will not be as hungry because I do not last more than two hours after I eat.

You're welcome Bella!

A tiny fill might help. When you eat solid Protein and don't PB or vomit, are you hungry in less than 4 hours? If so, then a fill is needed. I can't eat pasta if I have good restriction, but when my restriction is less, pasta is pretty easy. Remember carbs esp, refined carbs, i.e. pasta and rice will increasse your hungry. They cause a rise in your blood sugar and then when it bottoms out, you get hungry faster. When I eat solid protein and just tiny amts of veggies or complex carbs, I am satiated much longer, regardless of my restriction. Carbs always make me hungry faster.

My fill doc says that being too tight can also make you hungry, because you're never able to eat enough to activate the "full" receptors at the top of your pouch, so you never get the feeling of satiation from your food. While you certainly shouldn't OVEREAT, being too tight will cause you to undereat at each meal, and then you're hungry all day long.

Hmmmmmm... I never thought of it that way, but it makes sense.

Hello all,

I've been reading these posts for weeks now and have scheduled my surgery with Dr.K for March 3rd. I'm very excited and a bit nervous. I have a couple of questions for you veterans. Do most of you think the first fill at 4 weeks is too soon? Most Drs. seem to wait longer and since I'm flying from NC I don't want to waste a trip if it's done too soon. It also seems like getting the fills right is the biggest problem with the lap band. Have any suggestions? We are celebrateing our 30th anniversary on May 6th and a planning a big trip, do you think I will be up for it or should be postpone it? I'm so thrilled to have found this forum and all your great advise, can't wait to hear back from some of you old pros!

Cheryl Kirchner

Morehead City NC

Cheryl you will love having a new road to travel on and feeling like there is the real chance of getting healthy. Congratulations.

I went back to Colorado one month post op for a fill and to just look at it as a check up. I do not think it is too soon for a fill.

Best to you on your new life.

put me down on the challenge as -1.04

dare I challenge the Fates to throw one, more, thing my way?

Someone on here warned me about the medication and Constipation. This past week, and after hitting day 5 with no BM, I stopped the pain medicine.

There is an over the counter liquid you can drink that tastes salty that the pharmacist recommended that did not budge anything. Day 2 of no meds things started getting back to normal. It's Day 4 no pain meds and I am home and not working. I spent the morning crying.

Did you ever feel like you needed a break from your break?

So do any of the rest of you keep track of your calories? I stay between 800 and 1000 pretty consistently. But I was just reading some website that said for women to lose weight they should eat 8 times their body weight, which would be about 1400 calories for me. I am pretty darned certain that I would gain weight on 1400 calories a day.

Do I just have the world's slowest metabolism? Or is everybody eating fewer than 1000 calories a day?

Mini I stay about where you do. I watch my Protein too. I keep track ono sparkpeople. I don't think I would be doing so well if I didn't do that.

I think if it is working why mess with it!

Have a great day!

Mini,

I track my food intake including my Fiber Chews and Calcium Chews! (I know! I'm a freak!)

Anyway, I rarely take in more than 1000 calories a day! I think I need to really up my cals, so that my metabolism can increase too! I'm back to working out daily so it's time to increase my cals to 1200 at least. I fear that once I get to goal (years from now) I will gain weight if I ever eat more than 1000 cals. I know it's better for your body, your blood sugar and your metabolism to eat every 3 to 4 hours and eat around 1200 to 1500 cals. I just have to eat better foods. After I complete my carb cycling, I'm going to start Dr. Oz's diet again. It's whole and very healthy.

Yeah, I think my chronic dieting has really messed with my metabolism. I worry about the same thing with maintenance. I'm hoping this WOE I'm doing will help rev up my metabolism a bit. I think on the "carb up" days you end up with more calories, so maybe that will help.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
