Dr. Oz's New Book Seen on Oprah

Recommended Posts

I just bought Dr Oz's new book "YOU ON A DIET" that has been featured on Oprah and I have to tell you it is very very interesting and informative! I am learning things about my body that I never knew before and I consider myself pretty health savy! The eating plan from what I can see so far, eliminates all refined sugars and white flours as well as all unhealthy oils.Personaly I know ihave to get off white sugar and flour ASAP! What is amazing to me is that he judges your health by the size of your waist...the bigger your waist the greater you chances for severe health risks. Thats why being apple shaped is bad...and I am a big apple! The book is a best seller now and retails for 25 bucks...ouch! But good ole Walmart put it in my hands for 17! I just thought you might enjoy it as well.:biggrin1:

I got the book and only have had time to glance at it. I do like his appearances on Oprah and learn many things about my body. His two shows on weight have been very informative. I got the book with the DVD for exercise. Of course, its still in the shrink wrap. :)

I bought the book a couple weeks ago, but haven't finished it. It makes a lot of sense to me, and is very "readable" for a book with a lot of scientific data.

I saw the show yesterday, too, and the only thing that's bothering me was his response to the question about artificial sugar. I don't know if I can give up Splenda! The sweetener he recommended is Agave sugar (Agave is also used to make tequila). I found a site with more information:

"The agave (uh-gah-vay) plant has long been cultivated in hilly, semi-arid soils of Mexico. Its fleshy leaves cover the pineapple-shaped heart of the plant, which contains a sweet sticky juice. Ancient Mexicans considered the plant to be sacred. They believed the liquid from this plant purified the body and soul. When the Spaniards arrived, they took the juices from the agave and fermented them, leading to the drink we now call tequila.

But there is a more interesting use for this historic plant. Agave Syrup (or nectar) is about 90% fructose. Only recently has it come in use as a sweetener. It has a low glycemic level and is a delicious and safe alternative to table sugar. Unlike the crystalline form of fructose, which is refined primarily from corn, agave syrup is fructose in its natural form. This nectar does not contain processing chemicals. Even better, because fructose is sweeter than table sugar, less is needed in your recipes. It can be most useful for people who are diabetic, have insulin resistance (Syndrome X), or are simply watching their carbohydrate intake.

Fructose has a low glycemic value. However, according to some experts, if fructose is consumed after eating a large meal that overly raises the blood sugar or with high glycemic foods, it no longer has a low glycemic value. Strangely enough, it will take on the value of the higher glycemic food. So exercise restraint, even with this wonderful sweetener. It is a good policy to eat fructose-based Desserts on an empty stomach, in between meals or with other low-glycemic foods. Use it for an occasional treat or for a light touch of sweetness in your dishes.

FYI

  • This sweetener is sometimes called "nectar" and sometimes called
"syrup". It is the same food.
  • The light syrup has a more neutral flavor.
  • In recipes, use about 25% less of this nectar than you would use
of table sugar. ¾ cup of agave nectar should equal 1 cup of table
sugar. For most recipes this rule works well.
  • When substituting this sweetener in recipes, reduce your liquid
slightly, sometimes as much as 1/3 less.
  • Reduce your oven temperature by 25 degrees.
  • Agave nectar can be combined with Splenda to counter Splenda's aftertaste
and to control the amount of fructose used.
  • The glycemic index of agave nectar is low.
  • As a food exchange, a one-teaspoon serving of agave nectar equals
a free food. Two servings or two teaspoons equals ½ carbohydrate
    exchange. "

I saw the show yesterday and I'm thinking of going and buying the book. I love the belly fat that he showed......I can't remember what he called it but I thought to myself, "mine is shrinking, too!!" I love him when he comes on Oprah because I always learn something.

I also wanted to let you guys know there is another great book called "Sugar Busters" that is solely dedicated to keeping your blood sugar down by the food choices you make. I have the book, but I don't have it with me, so I can't tell you the names of the authors. It is a wonderful book my PCP told me to get. I've read the entire book and I try to follow it carefully. Just thought you may be interested in it to.

I have "You the owners manual" and I really have learned a lot. I think I will purchase the other one. I hate reading for pleasure, but when I am reading to learn something, I love it.

That belly fat is called omentum, remember, not momentum but omentum! Thats what he said and thats why I can remem ber it. Hes so funny and by the way my DH was in the room when he said the men can add an inch for every 35 lbs lost! I was so shocked that he could say that on tv, but I have been trying to get him to take his weight seriously, and I think he began to wonder!

ps Iluvmyboys

Why was your band removed. Will you have another one put in? Congrats on your amazing weight loss!

My band slipped and made me very very sick. I was self pay to have in put in, and hopefully my insurance is going to cover the removal since it was an emergency by the time it was removed. Dr. C from this board removed it

for me. I got my sick as a dog self on an airplane and went to his ER and

he (being the angel among us) removed it the next day. If I happen to win the lottery and can come up with the money, I will have another band put in at some point. I am feeling great now, but scared to death of gaining weight.

The appetite came right back like a tornado and I am truly worried......

Thank you for your concerns, I will continue to stay on the board for the support you all give. I love everyone and the information they so kindly share with us. ;)

Yup.....I luv the guy! Keep the waist to half the height!

I was glad to hear this because I am tall and I was thinking how will I get my waist so small but now I only have to get it below 35. That's doable. I'm glad he clarified that on the last show.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
