First doctor visit. Here it goes!

Recommended Posts

Hello my name is Karina, currently 19. Will turn 20 by June and I'm hoping to get sleeved before then. Yesterday I went to my first visit with my future surgeon (God willing)! It was so great, and I felt like a confirmation meeting him that this is the right thing to do. I have been reading for months blogs written by you, these are the same blogs that have inspired me to make that appointment that will change my life. Yesterday when I went for the appointment I had taken a letter I wrote to my surgeon on why I wanted this surgery he couldn't help but tear up and give me a kiss. He guaranteed me that this surgery will change my life and emotionally I would be so much happier. I am really excited for this procedure and my ideal weight coming true. I have been battling weight loss since 5 years old. I currently stand at 5'2 and weigh over 200 pounds. i have menstrual problems/ cholesterol so I'm hoping united health Care will cover the surgery. Please share with me on this blog, I had many questions when I first heard about the surgery so don't be afraid to ask !!!!! Be afraid of not being informed !

Love always ????????

I pray for much success for you. I have United Healthcare and had it during the time of my WLS so feel free to ask me anything that comes up with regards to them if I can help I will most definitely. I didn't have any CoMorbs and they still approved my surgery.

Thank you so much ! I pray every night too, right before going to sleep and imagining myself with the body I have always wanted. Getting to my ideal weight will help me become fertile, this makes me so happy! Knowing that I don't have to worry about not having children. I feel like sharing this procedure with everyone !!!!!!! Thank God for these amazing surgeons who are giving us all a second chance !

Hello! I just got sleeved 2 weeks ago covered by united healthcare... I also didnt have any co morbidities.. and the approval was fast... as long as you are aware that your particular plan covers WLS then everything should be fine! Best of luck to you...

They told me that my BMI had to be above a 40, or it could be 35 with 2 comorbities. Apart from that they said they would cover 80% of the surgery. Which is better than nothing so I'm hoping I will be approved.

Yeah those are pretty much the requirements.... Do you fall under either of those requirements?

Yeah I think so, I have to see what the surgeon says after some paperwork. Thanks I appreciate it!! Btw I'm new to this forum how do you reply directly ? And if you don't mind me asking how much have you lost and are the scars left from surgery really bad ?

I'm 5,2 as well. Haven't started my journey yet, I'm still waiting to see my doctor to refer me. Sadly united doesn't covere in Eugene Oregon but I have state healthcare given to me and they cover. I'm nervous but I know I meet the requirements. BMI over 40 but on top of that I have type 2 diabetes. I'm just worried about my doctor denying my wish to do wls and the 6 months I have to lose weight to shrink my liver

Just hold down and click on quote instead of reply and itll reply directly.. im pretty new too! Lol... the day of surgery I weighed 221.. that was March 6th.. as of today im weighing in at 204... the small incisions scars are very tiny those will definitely disappear after a while... the bigger one where the stomach is taken out of is about an inch wide and it doesnt look horrible but its very visible...

Hello Karina!!!

I'm similar stats but a bit older 28. Anyways, welcome!!! I'm pre-op too stuck in the dreaded kaiser options program for 6 months before I get a final approval & referral to surgeon.

I think the not knowing part is the worst bit.

Anyways, just saying hai!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
