Sure there is' date=' you're on it. The sleeve isn't a weight loss diet. It's the cutting back on calories that causes the weight loss. If I could live on 600 calories a day, and not suffer the hunger pangs and mental cravings, I would have. And I probably could have lost 30 pounds the 1st month. It just wasn't a life style I could live with long term.[/quote']

Good point ;)

Knowing stuff about the Gman is a privilege not a right. Many of you guys know more about me than many people around me. I am picky about who I tell but I must admit that I tell people out of orneriness sometimes. I like to see them squirm trying to figure out what the heck I'm talking about.

I care about whether Kim Kardashian looks better in bangs more than whether people approve of my operation. :P

I have been telling everybody about my surgery who will listen for several different reasons...

I'm excited and I want to share the excitement of me changing my life for the better, The outpouring of support from my friends and family and coworkers and others has been overwhelming , very few people have shown negative reaction and when they do, I act like I do not care,,,,

Since I have shared my story was so many people about doing the weight-loss surgery many people did not know this was even an option especially going to Mexico with great success and are now doing it themselves...

I feel like the more I share this with people the more I educate others about the awareness of obesity, controlling it and being able to do something about it and I'm proud of my decision of having the self-esteem & the courage to go forward to make myself a healthier better person !!

The only people who have given a negative reaction are the uneducated about the topic and the people who do not have a weight problem so I don't expect either one of those to understand anyway!

i feel so bad that people feel they have to hide this or lie about it ....So it is my opinion ...why lie because then you have to cover lies with more lies and he just gets worse ...be honest about who you are and I think people seem to respect me for having the courage to go forth but that's just my opinion and I respect everyone else's! :)

It is one of those things that is up to the individual. Leave space for those who feel more vulnerable in this process. This part of the process is a "walk a mile in someone elses shoes" thing. There will come a time that you want your conversations to vary from the surgery onto the habits you developed, and the healthy things you are doing. It is a phase of the process. Time tells so, so much.

I tell everyone, just as I did when I had my lap band placed. In fact, this has been easier since all I have to tell people is that I'm revising it, or if they're not familiar with WLS I say I'm getting it fixed.

My biggest motivation in telling the truth has been that I have quite a few people in my life that also struggle with their weight. I felt like if I said something like "I am just eating smaller portions or healthier foods and working out," it would lead them to feel like I had just succeeded where they were failing still, and that just felt mean to me.

I also know how hard this is, I've been through a WLS surgery before, and I know that the more people around me that understand what I'm doing and why, the more support and accountability I'll have as I move forward. Yes, there are some negative people, but my confidence in my decision and my need to be healthy far outweighs that.

But I also understand not everyone is comfortable telling people. To each their own.

Wow ... this topic ... again ...

Outside of the 3rd week stall thread, this has to be one of the most oft discussed thing here. HERE is the last one if anyone cares to read some history.

I don't understand why people, both sleeved and those not sleeved, can't understand why this is a personal decision and if I choose to keep it personal, that is my choice.

Please respect that.

I don't directly lie to people about it, telling people I do Water aerobics or something, but for the most part, I tell them I have decreased my portion sizes and exercise more. All of which is true. I started out having a similar attitude as the OP, but after being knocked down a couple times, I was like, "What business is it of theirs anyway?"

If I noticed a woman's bust line being different, would I ask them if they had a reduction or enhancement?

Why am I obligated to divulge my life?

As I have posted on this topic numerous times, I will copy and paste my theory on this:

It's like we are supposed to have some obligation to society about our lives. As I explained in another thread along this very topic, I:

  • Didn't tell anyone I was having a vasectomy to help me control my family size

  • Didn't tell anyone I had lasik surgery to help me control my eyesight

  • Didn't tell anyone I had hemorrhoidectomy to help my ... well, ya know ...

Why do I have to tell them my life story? This is
my
life, gosh darn it!

It depends on what your social circles are. I don't have any close girlfriends where i live now that I would confide in. My husband is my best friend. People here in Wisconsin are more of a "friendly acquaintance" status, but the circle also includes a lot of nasty gossips who look for reasons to be snarky about each other. I don't give any personal information to these people. I have no problem telling my good friends back home in Canada who are supportive. Relationships have a lot to do with who you are willing to share your information with.

My doctor put me on the pre-op diet 3 months before surgery ( not a liquid) so I was already steadily losing and people could see that I was eating less and I attended dinners so they knew I wasn't eating the bread and potatoes. My weight loss is therefore not a surprise or a big reason for discussion with anyone. I didn't have a huge drop after surgery and loss has been fairly slow since - in other words I could have just stayed on the pre- op and done as well - so there is no big question of a sudden drop. Nobody else is watching my scale to know how much I'm losing.

I agree with Ms. Antiband. Not every surgery in my life is everyone else's business, nor should it be. I didn't even tell my husband when I had a tuballigation. (Okay, so I didn't like him and was going to leave him). But still, I just don't feel the need to disclose every detail of my life just to satisfy other's curiosity. I would happily share with someone else who was considering the surgery, but for public fodder, no.

If you are not in my immediate circle of close coworkers or friends/family--you won't be told. There is no reason to. Most people dont ask. I've only lost 40 lbs, in 3.5 months, so it's been a gradual and fairly slow loss. Just the same as not asking a woman with a belly if shes pregnant, don't ask me if I had WLS. If you know, it's because 'I thought you had a right to know', not the other way around.

I never understand why people lie about the surgery.. I am flat out honest when people ask me how I lost weight , I don't sugar coat anything . If they don't like it that's there problem not mine. One of my best friends has lost over 100 pounds with the surgery it's been a couple years and she still continues to lie to people ! I just don't get it . I'm proud of my new sleeve and tell everyone that asks . I think it's more of a burden on someone's life to constantly be worrying and trying to cover up how they really lost the weight . Seems like it would just be easier to tell the truth.

For me it's very simple, I have an opportunity to educate and me telling others about the surgery eliminates the gossip.

And people.. Please stop insinuating that we are embarrassed, selfish, ashamed or worse.. We don't have close friends!?! Seriously? ... Really?!?

My WLS does not dominate my daily life. I am (we) are not LYING about anything and not telling others is not selfish, fact, (sorry if i step on toes or egos) I think it's more self centered to think everyone wants to know all about you and your WLS.

I agree, PdxMan.. the topic is well covered. ;)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
