Pre Op Liquid Diet. Help!

Recommended Posts

Ok, so you'd think the class and booklet would have been much more specific considering we're a bunch of obese over-eaters who don't have all that much restraint or nutrition knowledge. I'm on my liquid diet. 7 days full liquids and the last 3 are clear only. They said your "cream" Soups are fine the first week. Sooo.... broc and cheese Soup? Potato soup? I need specifics. I am starving and hate to admit I totally cheated day 1 & 2 bc I got so hungry and head aching and weak that I caved. I can't do that again. Surgery is a week from tomorrow. Help??? :(

I've cheated so much. I lost count.

Cream soup to me is any soup in a cream base! Is that wrong? So the ones you mentioned would fit the bill. Ah hell. I dont know.

my pre-op liquid diet says "Replace all your meals with a high Protein liquid supplement (can have up to 6 a day)"

Protein drinks that that have at least 15grams of Protein

include 64oz of fluids

include clear liquids: Water, SF drinks, SF Jello, SF popsicles and broth Soups.< /p>

good luck with your liquid diet....it'll be worth it!

They really just want you to shrink your liver. Mine was two Protein Shakes per day and one meal of lean meat and green veggies. I was able to eat all the way to the day before surgery. The liquid diets are harsh when you have a normal tummy. Any Soup that isn't chunky should work. I lost 15lbs the two weeks before with nothing as extreme as the liquid diet. Just shows you how different doctors are. You might feel more full with Protein shakes than with soup though.

Oh, see they did tell us to not have more than 2 Protein Shakes per day. She said cream Soups are ok first 7 days then its broth only the last 3. I could take so much liberty in that statement so I just wanted to make sure. I've been looking around and seems like there's quite a few different pre op diets. My aunt's good friend is a bariatric surgeon and he said a main point of the pre op diet is to test the patient's ability to change their lifestyle bc he's seen so many people have surgery and go eat crazy afterwards and get sick. Of course there's the very valid fatty liver point as well. Ah, I'll survive :)

If they say cream Soups I would assume they mean something like Campbell's cream of chicken or mushroom type things.. I'm thinking they don't mean something like creamy potato cheese and bacon from the local restaurant :)

Though it would be nice.

And yes the "fatty" liver shrinking is the main reason most of our doctors did the per op diet thing :)

OMGosh You guys are like heaven to my ears... I started my liquid diet today and omg seriously its ALL IN THE HEAD. I work two jobs and sometimes I am so busy that I dont get the change to grab a bite (i do eat a goo Breakfast though). I get home after 10 and most of the time i am too tired to think of food and i just shower and go to bed.

BUT all of a sudden I wasn't so busy today... wtfudge? and I was starving with my slim fast shake for Breakfast and 2nd shake for lunch. i was dying lol first time and i swear i am telling the truth... 3 co-workers came to me asking if i wanted to order food with them. My bf after work was like lets go get nachos and i'm like ummm HELLLOOO lol...

Anyways i am allowed 2 Snacks which i ate one after the other.. a 1/2 cup of sugar free jell-o and a 1/2 cup of yogurt.

MY MOTHER IS AMAZING... made my dinner.. 6oz grilled chicken, 1 cup of salad and 1/2 cup of broth. (Mind you i wasn't even hungry anymore)

lol

I can do this! WE Can do this.. by the way what kinds of shake are you guys drinking? Slim-fast is killing me slowly.

I have the myoplex lite which has forever ruined me on the taste and smell of cake. I have the true results brand. The vanilla is awful but strawberry and chocolate are great. I also have now foods whey Protein isolate. It is unflavored so you can add it to anything. Warm or cold. My fav post op one is the Protein Shots. They taste awful (fruit punch) but at 2.5oz. 26g protein and 110 calories they are perfect. She. I am not making my protein for the day I drink one. Two gulps and done. And they stave hunger. Sooooo triple bonus. I can't drink a whole shake now. I am 3 months out. I recommend the unflavored. Put it in Jello, yogurt, broth, whatever. Just put it in after slightly cooled so it doesn't curdle. Also, it mixes completely without the gritty taste.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
