How to health-ify favorite recipes

Recommended Posts

I love finding healthy ways to prepare my old (...okay, STILL) favorite comfort foods.

So I'm hoping maybe we can post some of our favorite tips here for each other, like...

Replace shells, tortillas, sandwich bread, with huge, crisp green lettuce leafs. I swear, it really makes me realize how often bread was just in the mix to CONTAIN things. Saves calories and carbs :) And I haven't done this once where using lettuce instead of bread/shells/tortillas made the food any less delicious.

I still use tortillas but I've never really liked flour tortillas and can really only eat one or 2 corn ones now at the most. I do however, make refried Beans with very little oil and with added onions, green peppers and garlic. I use grapeseed or canola oil instead of shortening or lard. I have about a half cup every other day or more.

Today we are having whole wheat spagetti with shrimp in marinara sause. I take a cast Iron skillet and brown onions, green peppers and garlic and add a little oregano in a very little bit of canola oil. Then brown some shrimp and then I use canned or bottled spagetti sauce (I am careful to get low sugar - most of them have very little fat already.) Then I open a can of mushrooms and add that too.

There is also flatout bread and pita bread that is low carbs. I find it at Walmart in front of the Deli lunch meat section. My family loves the flatout bread to make sandwiches. I cut the pita bread in 4 sections, lightly spray cooking pan and cook on each side until lightly crisp and eat tacos and fajitas in them. I also eat corn tortillas at times.

Sounds really good- I definitely can't wait to try some healthier cheesy recipes. I'm 4 days post op so I've got a ways to go but it's so cool to see what others are thinking of.

So is flatout a brand?

Oh and the things you can do with cauliflower- people make mashed potatoes, pizza crusts, buffalo wings... It's awesome. Pinterest is a great place to go to find recipes that are creatively healthy like that. I'm definitely a Pinterest addict :)

Its Joseph flatout bread toasted seseme seed that's heart healthy is that I get. They are huge to me. I can't even eat half most of the time. 13 carbs for the whole thing and 8 Protein and 3 Fiber.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
