MRI scan... can you ever get one after VSG?

Recommended Posts

I just noticed on another post that a sleever had a recent MRI and had some pain/burning from it? Then there was some discussion about getting MRIs after being sleeved. I never actually thought about it before but would the staples be problematic for future tests such as MRI? Are you not supposed to get MRIs after having the sleeve? What about X-rays or CT scans?

I am only concerned b/c I know when my husband had cancer, getting MRIs, x-rays and CT scans were frequent and they likely affected the outcome of his treatment b/c they provided vital information about his tumours, etc... I don't know if I could give up the benefit of being able to have an MRI down the road for the sleeve... this is just news to me today and I've really been shook up by it all.

Can anyone help to clarify? Would really appreciate also anyone who has had to get MRIs post-op and your experience with it.

I had an MRI about a month ago. The staples used for your sleeve are non metallic and do not interfere with MRI.

Oh, good question! I had one a few months before surgery for my back. I'd like to know the answer too.

I had 2 checking for leaks and infection. I was told the type of staple is ok even at airports.

I've had two in the past 4 months checking my spine. You know ... that long thing right behind the stomach ... no problems. Felt nothing unusual. I've had them pre-sleeve as well. Nothing different.

Titanium = non-ferrous metal

      Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

        As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

        Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

        Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

      Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
