Confused and Panicking

Recommended Posts

So here it goes. I had surgery in Mexico so I don't have a nutritionist. But I have a friend that had surgery here and theirs said to eat 3 meals a day and no snacking. And try not to have Protein Shakes, to try and get their Protein from food. Well I'm so confused. I haven't lost in a week, in fact gained 3 pounds! If I eat this way I'm not getting many calories or as much protein as most I see on here. So do you need a certain amount of calories to lose or not? And what about protein? How much?? Monday I will be 4 weeks out from surgery. I know everyone has different doctors but how many calories and protein do I need to lose? I'm panicked I won't lose anymore than this!

It is very common to have a stall at the stage you're at. Most people experience their stall between weeks two and three after the surgery, but for some it doesn't hit until four or five weeks out. You are actually only about 3.5 weeks out so I'd say you are in the normal three week stall so don't panic! I would say at this early stage you might want to consider one Protein Shake a day. I agree that it's best to get most of your Protein from real food, but you are still really early out so one shake a day should help you keep your protein to recommended levels. Don't worry, the weight will come off when it's ready to.

It is true that the farther out from surgery you get, the less you should rely on liquid Protein. However, I am 2.5 months out and I still have a Protein shake 1-2 times a week for Breakfast for the sake of grab-go-and-sip-while-I'm-in the car convenience. My NUT said that was OK. The shakes should not be your #1 source of nutrition, because you need to train your sleeve to eat normal food.

My surgeon and NUT told me that at 2 months out i dont have to have a protien shake every day but at least for the next year i should try to have at least 4 a week.

Your target protien should be between 60-80 grams

calories between 600-800. If your working out then calories should be around 1000.

You should check your insurance to see if you they will pay for NUT visits. i probably wouldnt mention you had surgery in Mexico.

I am 7 weeks post op and during weeks 5-6 i was stalled out so i upped my calories and protien and after the second day of eating more i lost 4 lbs. i average between 70-80 grams of protien and about 700-800 calories a day.

See I know I'm getting very few calories but I'm afraid if I eat more I really want lose. But I'm sure it is just a stall. I mean I've lost 31 pounds in less than 3 weeks. My body is probably just trying to catch up with itself. I've read lots of people aim for around 800 calories and I know I'm not getting that. My fear ever since I decided to have surgery is that I'll do all this and still be fat forever. I simply can't imagine that it really will come off. So I keep thinking yep this is it, that's all you are going to lose!

If you don't take enough calories in, your body will go in starvation mode and you won't lose anything. Try the Protein Shakes and Water (64 oz daily) and see what happens!

Trust me i think we all have the same fears! But if what your doing isn't giving you results then you have to shake things up a bit.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
