tattoos after surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!

I searched through the forums but can't find an answer so thought I'd try this.

My surgery is next Wednesday, 2/27, and I just found out that I won a contest for a free tattoo.

I have several tattoos already and just want to use the free tattoo as a cover up of a tattoo on my wrist.

My question is: when do you all think is an ideal time after surgery to tell the tattoo artist that I can get tattooed? I need to tell him a date and won't be seeing my doctor again until next week so I'm wondering if a couple of weeks should be enough, if it just depends on my body, OR I would have another reason to wait longer (issues with something in my body because of surgery, etc).

I know there isn't much fat on wrists so I don't care about waiting to lose weight, I just want it covered when I can.

Thank you in advance!!

If your not healed then the tatt may heal slow and you don't want to risk infection. Might want to ask your doc how long the effects of a blood thinner last if he gives you one, and the antithesisologist if there's any lasting effect on those sleepy time cocktails he's gonna give ya that may interfere. Your covering up and dont want it to look crappy. I would think if you are up on you feet, back to work, healed, etc you would be ok.

I have many tattoos, some little, some large. And I think blood thinners would be the only concern Id have. There shouldnt be any other reason why you couldnt get one. I of course am waiting to get my next big piece on my thigh until my thigh is a bit smaller but other than that kind of stuff, blood thinners should be your only concern. Wait until they are out of your system.

Honestly, I wouldn't do any sort of tattooing or body modification till your weight settles down into whatever you are going to be stable at. You are right about the wrist thing in that there isn't a lot of fat there but the symmetry of your wrist could change, and the shape of it might change too.

I agree with nurse grace. My wrist have gotten smaller, so I'd wait until your almost at goal.

I would ask your doctor, I had wanted a new one myself but my doctor told me it was to close to my surgery. ( it was one week away ) I am three weeks out now and he told me to go ahead if I wanted to, so hopefully ill be adding some new art to the lower part of my arm sleeve.

Yup, make sure you're not on any pain meds or blood thinners. Artists appreciate clients who aren't bleeding over everything. While your wrist will get smaller, the wrist is one of the least fatty areas on the body and would be least prone to distortion of any work you had done.

Thanks everyone! I totally forgot about blood thinners! I think I'll schedule it for a month in advance if I can. Since it's a contest, then I can't really ask to wait for up to 6 months to get tattooed. But i will try to ask my doctor next week. ^^

I have a tattoo on each of my wrists from before surgery. I lost over 100 lbs. and they haven't changed one bit. I also work in a surgery center and would recommend waiting a few weeks after your surgery to get a new tattoo. You don't want to risk getting it infected.

I had the breast cancer awareness ribbon tattooed on my right breast four months after surgery and it still looks great.

Wow, I'm glad I found this. You all answered my question. My surgery date is on April 9th. I was going to get a tattoo this Saturday March 9th, but I'm scared that they may tell me that I've compromised my surgery. But I will ask the Dr and see when I can have the surgery. Thanks once again.

I'm just over 2 weeks out and got 2 tattoos Wednesday. No abnormal bleeding (the top of my foot bled which is normal). So far I'm healing just fine. I think a month is good if that works for you.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
