Do men need to take an Iron supplement?

Recommended Posts

Like the title says, do men need to take an Iron supplement? I know women need to, but on my postop instructions from my doctor it says that women may need to take an Iron supplement... does that mean that men do not?

Currently I am only taking a Multivitamin, Calcium and B12. I am going to wait for my 3 month labs to see what my iron levels are like.

Just thought I would ask because I have been reading some mixed opinions in my research.

thanks

I don't think so unless you have a known issue with low iron levels. The 6 month labs will tell you. Just make sure you have some iron in the multi. We get a k

Lot of iron from Protein sources and leafy veggies.

My comment above is just from my own knowledge base and should not be attributed to medical fact. You may be perfectly ok taking the extra Iron. Others may not need it ( like myself). I tried to take more iron back around 1 month post op and it gave me the gag reflex for some reason. Never went back to it and my six month labs did not report any issues. If you are not sure, it is a good question for your NUT.

I don't have a nut I have a pcp and may be doing blood work for my follow up with her. Is the Iron the reasons for my chest getting bigger and the hot flashes? Lol

I take Iron but that's because I can't stomach the Multivitamins with iron in them. So I take a Gummy multivitamin without iron and then an iron pill.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
