Ibuprofen Alternatives?

Recommended Posts

My surgeon told me that after bariatric surgery Ibuprofen is too harsh on the stomach to take. I get terrible cramps in the arches of my feet when I do cardio (running, elliptical), and before surgery Ibuprofen knocked it right out. Now I'm having a hard time keeping up with my exercise regimen because the tylenol I'm taking as a pain reliever doesn't even come close to touching the pain. Does anyone know of an alternative OTC painkiller that is gentle enough for a sleeved stomach, but effective in relieving muscle pain? My flat feet and I are DYING here!

Tylenol (which does nothing) and things like vicoden. No aspirin, NSAIDs, ibuprofen etc...

This upsets me too, I don't know what I'm gonna take when I hurt!

Id love to hear thoughts on this too. I used to rely on Advil for pain, headaches and knee pain. Now I'm told its off limits. What's a good alternative?

I was never told not to take ibuprofen. I've taken it a couple times since surgery. I'm curious now...

I was told no nsaids for life for risk of ulcers. Tylenol never worked for me either. Thankfully, I haven't needed pain reliever as much since losing some weight. There is a prescription that is basically Tylenol on steroids, lol. If your doc will write some Ultram, which he/she should, it is stronger than tylenol and may help.

NSAIDs are a huge cause of gastric ulcers/bleeding even in non-sleeved patients.....smaller stomach surface area we have now, the greater the risk. More so with bypass patients. Acetaminophen is really our only option for OTC pain control. Hopefully the cramping in your feet will subside a bit as you lose more weight....silver lining ;)

there is a product that is prescription only its called volterin gel(SP?) it is a powerful NSAID that you apply to the area that hurts. It may help But you should ask you surgen if it is still safe to use it. I have used it for knee pain with success

Voltarin is extremely expensive here and should be used carefully. They sell it over the counter in Costa Rica and I told my OBGYN that I used it for cramps and she flipped. It's amazing stuff, but it should be through Rx only and used sparingly.

There is a gel NSAID called Voltaren....you rub it in the area that hurts. Officially it is for joints -- but I was desperate last week because I was in excruciating pain ( low low back/buttock). My brother has a prescription for Voltaren and he gave me his tube. Well, let me tell you, within 30 minutes my pain was so much better.

It does still have GI risks but I'm assuming not to the degree as taking it orally. I plan on discussing with my doc and getting an Rx for it ( if it is safe).

Without delving deep into the patho/pharm of NSAIDs.....the biggest worry is the local effect oral NSAIDs have on inhibiting enzymes necessary to protect your stomach lining....thus causing an ulcer/bleed. There is also a systemic or "body-wide" effect inhibiting these enzymes with topical NSAIDs...but the risk for ulcer/bleeding is much lower.

Also remember, OTC and prescription NSAIDs are different animals regarding strength and methods of action....always discuss with your provider and make an informed decision. Not trying to scare anyone....just inform ;)

Honestly Ibuprofen is my BFF! I can't live without it during my period!!!! I even ended up taking 600 mg of ibuprofen 3 days post op bc no narcotic could help with the pain I was experiencing. My surgeon gave me 3 diff kinds of pain killers and it helped for 45 min only. So I told him I can't take it anymore and took ibuprofen! He said ok but be careful. I was pain free in a matter of 20 min! Saved me! And I 7 months post op and still take it 3 times a days with food for cramps and headaches. :)

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
