I'd rather drink. Is this normal?

I am 4 weeks post-op today, so I am still on the puréed stage. I should start regular food this coming weekend. My problem is I'd rather drink my Protein Shakes for meals than eat food. If you told me this when I was in the liquid stage I would of said you are nuts! Nothing is really very appealing (mushy food gets old quick). Is it ok that I am still drinking Protein shakes so much? I'll have one for Breakfast and lunch and try to eat a small dinner.< /p>

Congratulations on your surgery! Both my NUT and surgeon stressed it was important to progress my diet as recommended, and as more foods were introduced, to lessen the shakes as long as I was getting my Protein in. Both said our bodies need to get used to more dense Proteins to get back to "normal" Denser Proteins will fill you longer as they take more time to process.

Call or email your NUT, see what they say.

enjoy drinking Protein Shakes, 4 weeks??? all that time and you still ENJOY drinking shakes???

OMG you are among a select few that has "survived" drinking those without any "disgust"

reading posts, you'll see many, many, many people hate those shakes and can't drink!!!! i'm at the top of that list.!!!!!

so kudos that you have drank those shakes for a month - i'm still looking at you in amazement!!!

that being said............

you are supposed to get Protein in your food now

stealing correct "wise" words ;) from JerseyGirl68 :lol:

get info from your NUT/surgeon - always listen to THEIR wise words!!!!!!

I know exactly what you are talking about. I did tell me surgeon that I feel so much better drinking the shakes and he said "so keep drinking them". I was soooo excited when he said that. Like you, I have a shake for breakfast and lunch and then try to eat a small (very small) meal for dinner. And with that small meal I am able to have a half shake before bed. I love my shakes. However I am dealing with a stall right now so I have been trying to stay away from the scale. I don't see the doc/nut til the end of the month so I will hang on till then.

I got so I just couldnt tolerate a single swallow of a Protein drink! But at the stage you are at, food is hard... so it is tempting to want to go back to what is "easier".

My main advice is to stay away from the high carb drinks and bars. Since eliminating my beloved Quest bars and switching back to using Premier Protein drinks as two "meals" a day my weight loss fired back up and I am nearing goal. My surgery was Dec 2011 and I am approaching having lost 150# since Dec 1 (start of preop diet).

Truth is that dense Proteins fill you better - I am FULL after a few slices of sandwhich meat, a slice of cheese all wrapped in a piece of lettuce. I would not feel satisfied after eating a heavy carb meal, triggers hunger in me again too soon. I eat a fair amount of deli meat, cheese, low carb yogurt, cottage cheese, lean chicken or other meat grilled with low carb veggies like salad stuff etc. I eat other things too, but what i listed makes up the core of my diet along with the Protein Drinks.

You sound exactly like me at this stage. I did this until about the 6 week mark as I had a lot of fear about progressing to the next stage. Any time I tried even the smallest of bites of "regular" food, it did not feel comfortable. My stomach had gotten so used to not performing its mechanical function, that anytime I introduced something other than puree, it just wasn't comfortable.

Bottom line, I had to get over my fears and take baby steps re-introducing "real" food. I started with cottage cheese, then did the baby bell cheese. Added tuna SEVERELY mixed with ranch and then lessened the amount of ranch daily. Doing this got me through this initial phase and I was able to progress from there.

I can't stand the Protein Drinks anymore either :(

However since I'm only 2 and a half weeks post op I can't get enough Protein from anything else. I eat chicken Soup, cream of wheat and yogurt. I go to see the Dr today so I'll see what she says. I have been able to eat a little bit of food, but I get a lot of pain in my stomach, I guess my new tummy isn't ready just yet. I am finding that I am getting a lot of headaches these days too. I wonder if it's from lack of protein. Any thoughts??

I'm a weirdo! I am several months out and I still like my shakes! I try to only have one for breakfast these days ( 30 gram drink) And meet my Protein with food after that. But somedays by dinner I just don't want to eat so I will occasionally have a shake then also. :)

I am 11 weeks out and do the same thing... Premier Protein for breakfast, but have food for the rest of the day. It's fine to like the shakes, but as others have said your stomach needs to adjust back to real food.

I'll be 20 months out Friday and just finished my chocolate Premier Protein shake. It is a great breakfast for on the go. And they taste good, too!

That's what I'm drinking right now too!!

Yummy :)

Oh and something else others have said is gross!

Since its winter time I just keep them in the cupboard and drink them room temp!! To cold for the refrigerated shakes right now for me..

And they are still yummy :P

I think there is always a place for Protein Shakes. I have at least 2 a day, 1 for breakfast and 1 after running for recovery. I also eat 4 other meals that are Protein centered. Sometimes I will have another shake when I go to bed, but not every night. It is important to get on an eating schedule, even if you are not hungry. Try and eat something every 2 or 3 hours and you will get a good response with regards to hunger, insulin level, metabolic levels and emotional levels. No crashes from large servings (relatively speaking of course) or large gaps between meals and each meal has 2-3 ounces per meal. It will take some time to develop these habits, but well worth it.

I am only 9days out today, but I love my Protein Shake. I found a chocolate Peanut Butter Protein shake and I think I'll be using this for awhile to help with my protein needs

      Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
