Hey Everyone!

Just a little update since I have arrived...

Samuel Sr. picked my mother and I up from the airport. He was not waiting for me in the loading/ unloading dock since my plane had arrived early. I called him, no answer but he immediately called me back and was their to pick us up in less than 3 minutes. He was very polite and welcoming. He was picking up another individual that was having surgery (please keep your phone on until you get picked up) and tried to call her, but no answer. So while driving around the airport he would get out and ask random people if they were waiting on him. And of course people were looking at him like a weirdo and then moving from their spots that they originally was standing in...quite funny.

After finally finding them, we ended up at the border in less than 25 minutes. Sam Sr. was the only one that had gotten out. He showed the guy some paperwork, explained our visit, opened the trunk and was heading for the Marriott in less than 5 minutes.

Once in Mexico, it took probably less than 8 minutes to get to the hotel. Sam Sr. unloaded our bags and the bellman loaded our bags to bring them into the hotel. Sam Sr. accompanied my mother and I in to make sure our reservation was in and that we were able to check in with no problem. The other couple took off to check in by themselves (her husband had been sleeved maybe 5 months ago). Check in went smooth. You do have to provide and debit or cc for incidentals. They also provided me with to passcodes to access the internet ( I did not have to request or pay for another one.) Received my room and was heading up ( the other couple were still checking in.) Fyi...if the person that you are going with are a smoker or you all want a room that you can smoke on...you can request that.

One of the bellman explained the layout of the hotel, how to use the elevator and turning the lights on in the room, showed us where the restaurant was and bar area and the time that everything closes. He brought our belongings up after the other couple checked in.

The hotel is very nice...it's a Marriott so I did not expect any less. I travel a lot and stay at many hotels. The bed is not soft soft when you think of how it is when you stay at a nice hotel in the US, it is a firm soft. It was comfortable to sleep but I prefer the US soft. Other countries prefer firm beds.

On to amenities..

The room does come with a refrigerator (which is locked), you must call to request it to be unlocked. You can also request for a microwave and they will bring one to your room. It is good because your companion can buy food and warm up. coffee and tea, flat screen tv (has a few english channels, also MOD), and bath and body works aromatherapy products.

My mom was anxious to get out of the hotel so she went walking to stores around and Walmart. I waited for my on-site contact Rosie to meet me at the hotel. She arrived about 30 minutes after checking in. She answered any questions that I had, gave me paperwork to fill out and bring to the hotel with me, gave me the receptionist name at the hotel on the 3rd floor and told me that she did not speak much english, and the time to be in the lobby to catch the hotel shuttle to the hospital, which is less than 5 minutes away.

My mom ate at the restaurant in the hotel. Great, attentive staff is all I can say! One of the hotel managers were there keeping us entertained and telling us different stories. My mom got 2 free margaritas and the meal comes with a 15% discount...just mention the organization that you are with.

Tips:

I did tip with US currency. I gave Sam $5, my bellman $3, and our server at the restaurant $5.

I have surgery today, so I will update you all later.

I had my surgery yesterday afternoon. Woke up feeling groggy with some nausea. It was pretty rough I must say...was thinking what I had done to myself, that is how bad it was. I was gagging and spitting up saliva with blood. After doing this felt some relief from my stomach. One of my doctors informed me that alot of AA patients have some nausea because of the anesthesia. Doing a lot of walking which is helping and alot of sleeping hehe. Doctors and nursing have all been great!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
