Question about liquids..

Recommended Posts

Hello everybody, I'm pre-OP and have been reading some post on this Forum.. I have a question, a lot of people talk about having problem getting all their liquids in, I'm wondering why? Is it because it's painful? It comes back up? Or because there's only so little you can take before you feel full? Thanks..

I think this issue comes down to a few things. We do have to drink in sips, very small sips initially because our sleeves are swollen and can only hold so much. Some folks don't work in environments that are conducive to carrying a bottle of Water around with them. I'm lucky in that regard. I'm at a desk and can keep a bottle by my side all day.

I found after a week of small sips I was able to practically drink normally, just not gulp and I haven't had issue with getting in around 80oz a day. In the days immediately after surgery, in my opinion, we have so many things to think of.. am I getting in my Protein, am I drinking enough.. . Don't drink and eat at the same time. That it can very easily become overwhelming. My surgeon and my NUT both told me that it is very hard to get in all your Protein the first week or so, but do your best. Getting in your liquid is of greater importance initially. You will find what works best for you.

I have found that I can drink Vitamin Water Zero and herbal teas faster than water (not unusual according to my NUT) So I mix it up and keep track.

not long following my surgery i "forgot" we are to sip and not gulp. gulping hurts! it's kind of annoying having to sip. i'm 1+month post surgery and still find it difficult to get in all my fluids. Good luck!

For me the not drinking 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after meals makes it hard to get enough liquids. I feel like I'm always 30 minutes on either side of a meal when I'm thirsty.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
