What type of fish can I eat a semi large portion?

Recommended Posts

Try acting like you are an actual actor on TV, have you ever noticed that they don't really eat but spend a ton of effort cutting and moving their food around? Eat a few bites and tear that plate up

eeek I worry about this logic. I understand why you are asking but honestly, you might just consider Soup because think about this - if you do this, order some fish with the mindset that you are trying to eat a larger portion than normal, and you get sick and end up in the bathroom for an extended period of time that will be SO MUCH WORSE.

I agree! I really can't get my head around why all the shenangan's some go through, hiding what you eat, the concocted stories about what surgery you had. Any time you have to put that much effort into something to benefit others it is in my opinion unnecessary stress. Oh, Snapper is a very tasty fish.

Not to be confrontational but let me maybe share with you why I relate to people who don't want to tell people about their surgery.

A few years ago I had a lapband, I told everyone, because I had that same mentality that you seem to have, might as well be honest right? Everyone knew. Well, I started having extremely serious problems with the band and eventually gained all the weight back. EVERYONE KNEW. It was embarrassing and I learned a lot from it, but everyone watched me cut myself open, do all that to myself, suffer so much, only to have a very obvious failure. This time around I am NOT doing that to myself again.

I am a little more stealthy than some, and I dont need to come online usually to ask strangers how to help me hide things because I can manage on my own just fine, but I understand them. If you had experienced public humiliation like that you might understand a little better why some people just will not share this information with people who are not our close confidants.

There's also something to be said for not over-sharing Over-sharing is so common these days with the Facebook mentality that everyone has. Wanting a little privacy is OK, and I think its a healthy thing to maintain some privacy.

I'm not one to over-share, and like you I believe privacy is very important. On the other hand, I also feel that lying and concocting fabricated stories takes too much energy. I don't believe in lying. I won't/don't let others opinions of me and my life choices bother me, but then again I'm not the type that will cower and allow others to humiliate me either. I get it that others may not have to strength or courage to stand up for themselves, not me. I guess I'm just a confident person and refuse to be anything else. Oh, and no worries I didn't take your post as confrontational. :)

If it's really a concern, you could always say you ate a little while earlier and not really all that hungry

The type of fish isn't going to affect the portion size. You're not going to be able to eat more of one kind of fish than another.

Actually Stef, for just this once :P I have to disagree with you. I find denser fish (halibut in particular) much harder to eat than salmon or rock fish or even cod. Then if you go with cheeks, gad that's like eating scallops and I might get one down. For halibut I tend to have about an ounce to an ounce and a half, but for salmon I can eat three if it's moist (cooked correctly).

Not telling people private health information does not equal lying. It aldo doesnt mean that you are somehow more confident and comfortable with yourself than I am so lets not draw these false equivalents.

Urgh, can you tell me where in my post did I state that I am more confident and comfortable than you? My statement " I guess I'm just a confident person and refuse to be anything else." is a general statement about ME and my views, not directed to you. I'm sorry if you felt that it was an attack against you it was not, I was simply stating my opinion. Sigh........

My dear Gemini,

It was definitely implied in your statement.

But I'm sure nurse Grace can handle herself on this one.

Another thing the op asked about fish. Not what you thought of her philosophy on the matter of telling strangers or not.

Some tell everyone.. some don't .

I personally reserve the right to change my mind everyday as to tell someone or not.

It has nothing to do with ones love and confidence in ones self.

As I stated initially " Any time you have to put that much effort into something to benefit others it is in my opinion unnecessary stress." and I stand by that statement. AGAIN, My statement " I guess I'm just a confident person and refuse to be anything else." is a general statement about ME and my views. I can state my views, just like yous stated yours. It's not personal, and if either of you think that....so be it. Enough said, I have nothing further to add to this topic.

Maybe you dont feel that way, and I'm not here to have some kind of beef but as laura said, the way that was written it was implied so heavily its hard not to take it as meaning that, and its constantly stated in more plain terms all over this site that those of us who don't share with anyone and everyone are somehow less confident, lying, etc.

The fact is that me, having gone though weight loss surgery once before and experienced what it can be like long term (even before I started failing) have experienced all kinds of things that would make me not want to really share.

You may grow to regret the day you told everyone in your life (If you did, that is a general statement I know) and I can't help but be more careful now, knowing what I know.

Ditto that. Its noone's business what you are eating or if you had surgery. It is a total irrelevant overshare IMO.

Also, people do watch what others eat, particularly women. I know men might not have experienced it, but there are social expectations and sanctions on women's eating that are often very, very subtle. Just like a man can be overweight by 50lbs before he statistically sees loss in pay--for women, its much lower.

Women are more likely to have faced stigma while eating hence the desire to appear as normal as possible. Besides who likes there eating habits to become the center of the convo?

Devils advocate...or is that gemini's advocate :P I think what she was saying is that it becomes challenging to make excuses verses just saying whatever it is you need to say. I personally wasn't going to tell anyone that I was having surgery but as the dates got closer I was finding that in order to keep it a secret I was going to need to lie to my friends more and more as I couldn't do some of the things I normally would have with them (ie dinners etc). I did the "we're busy" a couple of times, but it was going to turn out looking like we just didn't like people :P or we were going to need to lie like a sheet, which I didn't feel comfortable with.

That said, at a meal you can say you're just not that hungry, etc (which is true) when it's a situation you don't want to share in. But I was recently in a situation like that and I still found that saying "I literally can't eat that because of a recent surgery" was much easier than mousing around the subject as food was passed. In this case they were all recent acquaintances and likely are people I'll never see again (aside from a couple) but I still found it easier to say what was up verses fibbing my way around the subject. When it's multiple meals with the same people you can't really get away with the "not hungry" thing more than once or twice.

I'm looking forward to the day when I'm able to eat a reasonable amount (ie a cup) so I can eat a bit more normally in social settings. At my work everyone knows I had the surgery, so it's not an issue, but I'm also the boss so that helps :) I totally get someone not wanting to share too much in those circumstances. It's a hard road early out and both ways have their merits. I'd just say that sticking to phrases that aren't lies is going to be easier than saying "I've got the flu" or something similar.

But one thing I wouldn't do...is worry about portion sizes (ie the fish issue). I would stick to whatever I am able to normally eat and not push it because to do so might end up with you barfing up your pretty fish which would be a lot worse than just eating a bit less! I personally find that the way something is cooked makes a huge difference in how much I can eat. Overdone salmon...I can eat a bite and know it's not going to sit well, but cooked perfectly...I can eat a decent amount. So to plan to eat a certain amount would be difficult for me unless I really knew the restaurant.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
