I am planning on using our tax return to get my surgery. But im starting to feel guilty, like maybe I should not get it and use the money towards bills. But then im worried I will regret not getting the surgery and have to wait another year before I will have the money to do it again. Help!

I agree and that's also what I was getting at.

Someone once said on this forum something that has stuck with me. She said she didn't make alot of money (only about 15K/year) and she paid for her surgery with a credit card. She said we always need more money but money is just money. The health benefits and changes to your life is what counts.

i disagree strongly with this statement. the stress and health impact of high amounts of credit card debt is intense. sure, money is just money, but if you have a family that relies on you then you have to be smart. taking care of your weight is a fantastic move, but saddling your family with debt to do so can have serious consequences.

if you are up to date on your bills and can handle the minimum payments and a small "debt snowball" then go for it. otherwise get your finances in order before you do it.

for what it's worth, i have 2 kids in an expensive private school which precludes my ability to self pay. i was interested in surgery a few years ago but it wasn't covered by my insurer. i changed employers and, again, it wasn't covered. after another change in employers it's covered 100% and i'm currently waiting on approval. if i had paid out of pocket or run up my credit card then it would impact my ability to care for the kids.

i'm not saying don't do it - i'm saying you should evaluate your options, run the numbers, and see if it makes sense right now.

15k per year, and charging 5k+ to a credit card... that's going to take forever to pay off. I don't see how you *could* pay that off without a second job. I took the debt on because there's a lot I can cut from my budget to pay it off, I can cut cable tv, restaurants, cell phones and other luxuries, but what can you cut when you're already at the bare minimum? That would stress me out so much.

If you are not in danger of being homeless ( ior jailed) think you should go for it. I know how you feel, I've been going through the same feelings and have myself already put it off for over a year now.... Even if you use your tax return for bills and wait.... Chances are next year there will be something else, some other opportunity that needs your money or seems like a priority. Do this first.

If you are not in danger of being homeless (or jailed) by your financial situation... Do it now... I have put mine off for over a year now (also due to guilt) and I can tell you with absolute certainty.... There will always be something else buying for that paycheck. Don't put it off anymore.... Your never going to get your time back...

I was self pay and also felt guilty about spending so much money on myself. I have to tell you that it was the best decision for me. Some days I would like to have those student loans paid off (not that the 6k woud have done that!!) but I feel great and am so much happier. Go for it if , like others have said, your bills will be manageable after the surgery.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
