How long did you take off work?

Recommended Posts

I just finally got approved after a battle with insurance. I've seen several threads on here about this but I wanted to be more specific.

My job/ins. Benefits are ending in less than 6 weeks. I need to have surgery asap really but at the same time have to be interviewing for a new job. I'm in HR and have desk job. Some meetings and slight lifting and walking. But how long did you take off? Did you take off too long? If you had office job- was 2 weeks enough time to heal?

Thanks!!

Hi. Some people go to work 5 days after! I just took 8 days off, work Thurs & Fri then weekend hits. I'm a HR Specialist in Lansing, Mi. Take 1 week & see what you feel like. The Dr. will always extend it for you ....

I took off two & 1/2 weeks and I was fine to go back to work. I'm a teacher and I'm on my feet all the time as well as up and down stairs and lots of walking...and I haven't had any problems. As a matter of fact, I noticed it was way easier to go up stairs than before surgery! I have a lot more energy.

I took off 2 1/2 weeks as well. I was okay to go back but probably would have benefitted from the extra 1/2 week - not because of discomfort, but because of a lack of energy. If you are able, 2 1/2 to 3 weeks is probably ideal. If not, there are many amazing people who went back to work just days after the surgery. That would not have worked for me - I was on clears for 2 weeks and very weak, on the verge of blacking out many times. I think your post-op diet really impacts your ability to maintain your energy level.

My surgeon said two weeks was recommended but I could go back after 1 week. I have a desk job. He said I would probably feel weak by end of day. My surgery date is 2/25

I told my doc I wanted 4weeks off. The first 2weeks is to heal and the other 2 to start a workout routine. Like they say, it takes 21days to create a habit and I am determined in creating good ones. Is a lifestyle change so make sure you give yourself time.

My surgeon prefers that people take as much time as they can because the first few weeks it's hard work to get your fluids/liquids/blended food. I went out 12/24/12 and was approved off until 02/04/13. It depends on your work policy though. I'm getting 100% pay while I'm out, some people don't have that luxury. Take as much time as you possibly can in my opinion!!

Went back after 2 weeks but I worked 6 hours days for a week.

I didn't think about this possibly being an option! That's a great idea if someone offers me a position--I can always ask to start off partial days (training, etc.) for the first week or start off on thursday and friday only. :)

I was out for 3 days.

WOW!! 3 days! I had my gallbladder out in June and that killed me. I had a baby naturally - vaginalky and was walking around right after but gallbladder took me 2 weeks to truly recover :-/ Go figure. Appendix out in 2006- 3rd day I was riding roller coasters.

I really have NO idea what to go by on how I'll heal but only hope it's not like gallbladder.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
