One week post op and have no struggle to get liquid down

Recommended Posts

Hi sleevers. I am one week post op and am having no trouble at all getting in 60 grams Protein and all the necessary fluids. Should I be concerned that i am not feeling restriction? I think I remember reading over the past year that the restriction will be felt once I move to solids. I am getting in the requirements by starting the day with a Premier Protein shake (30 grams protein), and then sipping a Cytomax whey Protein Drink (32 ounces of protein). I finish the day with another Protein Shake and/or Water with MIO. I feel like my sleeve might be too big.

i am one week out and only on Clear Liquids at the moment. i start full liquids on thursday. i have no problems getting down my Isopure (even though i'm so sick of it) and the required amounts of Water either. luckily i haven't had any gas pains. i'm worried that once i move on to full liquids and foods that i will start experiencing the symptoms that people keep mentioning - the nausea, gas, etc. i don't think its strange or that your sleeve is too big. i think we are LUCKY!!!! LOL

This is not a problem at all - I was doing well enough on Protein (90+ g per day) by day ten that the doc was adding veg to my diet. There is a wide variation between us all - my wife could barely consume her nominal stomach capacity in liquids when she went through this a few years ago while I could easily down 10-12 oz of broth and juice in the hospital (with no concern on the part of the surgeon, as it's just the normal variations that he sees.) The liquids and soft stuff that we are having early on generally goes through pretty easily with little restriction, but once you start having firmer Proteins, particularly meats that need some processing by the stomach, you will feel a lot more restriction.

Some solids will also go on through fairly easily (the so-called "sliders" because they "slide" on through your stomach) while others like meats will take their time. Unfortunately, a lot of the sliders are high calorie, low nutrition crap that can torpedo our weight loss efforts, but a lot of them are also low calorie, high nutrition foods like many fruits and veg, so there is some learning curve as to how to eat with a sleeve to achieve your goals. At a year and a half plus out, I can eat a lot of salad veg (6-10 oz) but still only 3 oz or so of meat by itself, so there is a little different style of eating than before - if I want to minimize calories with good sataity, then meat and high Fiber veg will do it, but to get in more calories (as I need now, at around 2000 per day) I have more meat/veg combo dishes like stews and stir fries with some sliderish yogurt and fruit as Snacks.

I am 4 days post op and just about getting all of my 60 grams of protien in a day and 64 ounces of clear fluids. I definately can feel a tightening in my chest if I get too full, but since it is just liquids it goes away soon and I just keep sipping. My surgery went real well and I have so far had no complications. Looking forward to new beginnings. I lost about 40 pounds before surgery, so I have been feeling good. I think my surgeon and bariatric team did a wonderful job of preparing me for this, and it looks like yours did too. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. And here is to a new and healthier us.

Shannon, all the people I interviewed (26 patients) whose surgery was performed by Dr. Nicholson commented on exactly the same things you're pointing out here. There are many quality surgeons out there whose skill and post-op programs most often produce the kind of terrific results you are currently experiencing. You are fortunate that you chose one of the very best in the nation. Count your blessings, give thanks and move on with no worries. As with all trouble-free patients who work toward continued success, you will experience the kind of weight-loss results you are looking for as long as you continue to follow your doctor's orders to the letter.

It's all good dear one.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
