how to people eat just for fuel and not for taste?

I've tried just eating what's good for u and healthy but I cannot do it. I think it's all in my head. Such as Protein Drinks and plain meats, I wish I could eat for fuel and forget taste any suggestions?

Healthy doesn't mean bad tasting. Learning how to properly season food makes even things that are good for you taste delicious. Take salmon, which is good for you. A little butter, some dill weed, salt and pepper and baked or steamed is very tasty. Try not to let your food dry out when cooking. So many people overcook food and nothing is worse than trying to choke down some overcooked, dry, rubbery food :(

Also, the less bad food you eat, the better good food tastes. We're hard wired, as humans, to crave food that's heavy in salt, fat, and sugar - things that humans used to not eat a lot of because they were hard to come by. Food is addicting, but it's not like we can stop eating. That's why it all comes down to choice.

There's soooo many seasonings beside salt and pepper...try some fresh herbs.

I will never be someone who just eats for fuel and not for taste. I'm a foodie inside. Always will be, can't change that. Having said that, as mentioned above healthy doesn't have to mean tasteless.

You learn to adapt your food to fit tastes. I love taking an unhealthy food or recipe that I loved pre op and making it healthy post op. for example- I'm Italian so I love me some lasagna. Post op I made a lasagna-esque dish with eggplant slices instead of noodles. Was delish! There are so ways to make the same food so you don't get bored. It's all about experimenting.

Not a fueler here either...lol

The smell of food,the flavour,the taste POPS for me since surgery.I like it so much more now.I cook food that is so much tastier!

We need healthy oils.Cooking with olive oil makes food tastier.It fills you up faster too.There is a lot of herbs and spices that actually really helps us lose weight.

Read up on this a little and let your imagination and creativity take over...lol

I agree, healthier does not have to mean bland or bad tasting. If you have not already, check out theworldaccordingtoeggface.com and emilybites.com Chock full of great recipes for every stage. Great tasting and you can alter as you need. I just made the lasagna cupcakes the other day and they were awesome. No sacrificing taste at all.

I think the idea of using food for fuel doesn't mean you don't enjoy what you're eating. I think it means it doesn't control you. The fact is that for many of us, it takes a long time post op to enjoy food again. For months I ate because I had to, not because I wanted to eat.

During that time I got to the point where I could eat in moderation and food no longer had the power to make me crazy. It's just food. Yeah, I enjoy eating but I very seldom ooh and aah over a meal. I don't feel guilty, I don't feel the desire to consume more than my set aside portion and I don't think about food between meals unless I'm preparing it.

It's enjoyable, but in the end it's just food.

And I'm more of a food snob than I ever was as a big girl. My tastes have changed and my standards are higher. Just pouring a heavy sauce over food doesn't make it tasty, and using less than quality ingredients shows. If I'm only going to eat a few bites of a food, they had better be very tasty and very healthy or I'll be displeased!

I agree with the other posters that if you're eating bland and boring foods that you don't like, simply because you feel you're supposed to, that you need to change things up. Quickly, too, or you'll burn out and fall completely into bad habits. It's far easier to stick to a healthy lifestyle if you don't feel deprived. Branch out with spices and try to introduce foods you didn't eat regularly prior to surgery. Your tastes have likely changed and it's possible you'll find new foods to love. In moderation, as fuel. :)

U have to find something to live for.thats more important than the taste of food...such as being heealthy

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
