What does your hunger feel like?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I was sleeved 11/7/12 and am down 31 pounds! Yay!! I have noticed that my hunger feelings have changed. Instead of the rumbling tummy and feeling like I'm going to die if I don't eat I now just seem to have the feeling like my throat is closing up.

It's a weird feeling but doesn't prevent me from eating and feels better when I eat, until its time to eat again.

Does anybody else have weird signs if hunger?

Thanks

Suzy

Hi there! My hunger doesn't feel like hunger, pre-surgery exactly. It's more like an emptiness. At 3 months post-op this Friday the 11th, I'm still amazed at the tiny amount of food required to settle down my new tummy. I do have to be careful as I've experimented lately with holiday treats (I know, I know...a big no-no! I didn't have surgery so I can eat like I used to - unhealthy foods. Once I found that I could eat a cookie, I was like "Noooooo!) Getting in my Protein has been a challenge, but I do find when I eat enough protein, it's easier to say no to the taste of cookie. (I haven't had bread or crackers since August, though. I really don't want to open up that flood-gate!)

I get this really hollow feeling in my stomach, and sometimes my stomach does grumble or make gurgly noises.

Everyone once in a while my stomach feels like it's eating itself! However, I attribute that to acid reflux, even though nothing comes up my throat or do I feel like I have heart burn.

I haven't felt "hunger pangs" since surgery, but I do have kind of an "empty" feeling that is pretty much impossible to describe. I know I'm full when either I have to just push my plate away or I feel like I've got something in my throat. The throat thing is definitely a warning that maybe I have eaten just a tiny bit too much.

I feel the same way..very empty. But when I eat just a couple bites I feel stuffed, but still empty down further in my gut. Hard to describe.

The only "hunger" moment I've experienced post op was during this pregnancy.

Otherwise, the empty feeling or dizziness will set in before I realize I've missed a meal or gone too long without eating.

Gurgling is normal early out - my sleeve was noisy as all get out for most of the first year post op. Just watch the acid and take a PPI if it turns into a hungry tummy rumble. If you at any point start to feel that hungry growly stomach you had prior to surgery odds are good you need a PPI because you're either not on one or the one you're on isn't doing the trick. I bring this up because even as a sleeve vet it's easy to get confused by this. I had to restart my PPI recently due to pregnancy and the "OMG I'm starving all the time" went away as soon as I was back on one. You'd think I'd connect the dots more quickly, but nah, I had to suffer for a few weeks first.

Thanks, Cheri, for the advice about changing Ppi. In addition to my prescribed one each morning, I started talking Pepcid OTC at night, but I'm starting to realize I may be misinterpreting the gurgling as hunger when I should address the ant-acids I'm on. I have my 3 month post-op visit this Friday and my prescription needs refilling, maybe we can change brand or increase dosage. I'm trying to keep the Protein as my focus and since I'm still struggling with meats, dairy is my go-to for at least one meal, besides a shake for Breakfast. Maybe my gall bladder is acting up. We'll see.

I was sleeved may and I had a lot of issues but I went to a gastro doctor. Well they found a ulcer but the dr did say to take gasx. He told me the stomach is so small any gas that gets in it makes it feel bloated and uncomfortable . Gasx does give relief and he changed the ppi to dexliant

This is exactly how I feel --- empty deeper down. I had done a Google search with the words "post op gastric sleeve empty deep" and your post came up! Even when I'm full from 3 bites of food I still feel it so I know it's not hunger but it feels like hunger but just much deeper and acute.... I'm on Prilosec 2x day and it's not helping...

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
