I would punch someone in the face for a drink of water

Recommended Posts

It's done! I had my surgery yesterday (12/18/12), and they still aren't letting me have a drink of Water. How long does this usually take? I'm not hungry, and my pain is under control, but I feel like I'm going to have a break down if I don't get a sip of water soon!

see if they will let you have some ice chips. You should start getting an ounce of Water and then an ounce or two of Protein fairly soon.

That sounds strange - they let me eat ice chips within an hour of recovering and sip on Water the same night. But I guess each dr is different.

Ask for ice.

They just brought me water! I never thought I'd be so happy to see a small cup of water!

LOL. Not really laughing because I can remember that thought of, "I'd kill for just a SIP of water". I think I had to wait almost 12 hours before I could get ice chips and at that point it tasted like the best ice cream I had ever had. Hang in there- the reward is coming! Just remind yourself you aren't getting dehydrated, even though it may feel that way, because you are still getting IV fluids. But man.....its tough! And remember too- we were ALL at that point. Hang tough!!! This will soon be a distant memory!

I couldn't have Water until I did my leak test and passed ;-)

I know how you feel. I begged them for those sponges to dip in water to get my mouth wet.

Congrats on your surgery!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
