Feeling a little glum.....

Recommended Posts

Today's my 2 week anniversary. All has gone and continues to go well - but for some unknown reason today I feel a little 'blue'. In the past I would self soothe with snacking (crunchy things like chips or popcorn) . I'm not craving any of that food but just feeling at odds with how to deal with the feelings without my old crutch. Since I started my journey I have lost 30 lbs but more importantly, I am off my diabetes medications and only take 1/2 of one of my HBP meds. Has anyone else had some feelings of sadness following their surgery?

Maybe its the general feeling of the country following the tragic attack in CT, maybe I'm tired, maybe it's a normal post op feeling, maybe a combo of all three.....

nice to have a place to vent with people who have been through the same thing.

This is what almost everyone experiences at two weeks. There are various reasons for it.

Estrogen from fat cells is being dumped out into your system, you have been through physical trauma, you can't self soothe with food you are still recovering.

Now in week 3 or so you are going to hit a big stall. Just about everyone does that, too.

If someone around here is good with computer graphics, we need a big infographic for what happens when. You can almost set your calendar by when certain things happen for most people.

First off, HUGE Congrats for your amazing start. I know alot of my head hunger is triggered by emotions. The tragedy in CT is overwhelming, and the place we used to go to bury those feelings isn't an option for us right now. It is a loss to an extent, and something we all have to learn to work through the best we can.

We are also smack in the middle of a very big "eating" season. Cakes, Cookies, candies everywhere we turn. I couldn't turn on the TV this weekend without seeing a commercial for some holiday candy or treat. The very best thing you can do is acknowledge it. (Which you have) This is all such a learning process for all of us, and I'm so happy that folks have the courage to admit when it gets a little trickier. Why not have a sugar free ice pop or SF pudding? Have your little snack if it will help you through, just have a better one than we might have picked before.

Good luck, You're doing AMAZING!!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
