How much should I be able to eat?

Recommended Posts

I know everyone is different in this category, but I'm a little worried that I'm not eating enough. I am 1 month out (11/12/12) and can only eat 1 ounce of anything per meal. This morning, I had 4 small sips of Soup (wasn't hungry even then), went to my urologist and that took 3 hours so I missed lunch (wasn't hungry then). Just ate dinner and had 4 small bites of chicken and I'm full. I doubt if I've gotten 150 calories in today. Anyone else eating such small amounts one month out???

I just returned from my informational postop class. That amount you are eating sounds right, BUT, you should be eating all Protein at one month out. With my surgeon, I will just be graduating to smooth foods at one month. We all have varying regimens we have to follow.

I was sleeved 11/12 also. I'm able to eat about 1.5 to 2 ounces at a time. Tonight I had about a half a cup of chili for dinner. I am getting in around 600 calories a day and make it a point to get at least 60 gr of Protein a day. How's your protein intake? Water intake?

I'm not proud of my protein/water intake. When I do eat, it is Protein. I have yet to find a protein supplement that I can tolerate. I am drinking about 32 oz Water. I'm trying my best to get it in, but it is quite a struggle. I feel better knowing that I'm normal right now. My next appointment is on the 20th and I don't want to bother my surgeon unless absolutely necessary.

I would definitely say Water is the most important thing. I always try and make sure I get that in, then the Protein. How's everything else? Pain ok?

I am now at 31/2 mo post op, I was worried about my Protein and limited amount of food intake in the beginning. My doctor said to not worry, this is for a lifetime and your protein grams will increase over the next month. My protein has increased, I try to stick to 1/2 c of food every 3 hours.

Pain has been great. I've become dehydrated from my decreased intake of fluids so I have developed a kidney stone! Just my luck I guess!

I am just over 4 months out.

As far as liquids go, Water was tough for me for a while. It just seemed "thicker" than some juices and other beverages. Even still at times. I try to drink some coffee before or after Breakfast, a medium Powerade from Sonic mid-afternoon, and a glass (or two) of milk (for Protein per my NUT- whey makes me want to puke). V8 Diet Splash (mango peach) is a fave and pretty low in calories. Also: I passed a kidney stone two nights before I had my surgery. I have two more very very small ones and I think one is moving. Try to get those liquids in. Low cal juices, milk and Powerade zero might go down better than Water and aren't that high in calories. No more calories than you're getting now it shouldn't hurt.

Regarding food, as a sample, I can eat a pack of oatmeal for Breakfast, 1/4 to 1/2 of a small chili from Wendy's for lunch and 4 or 5 shrimp for dinner. For a while, I felt very hungry at times (between meals). I sometimes get a little hungry, but not as bad. A triscuit or some almonds do the trick for me.

Every doc and nut are different in their reccomendations, diet plan, etc. Re liquids, this is what works for me and I'm down 60 lbs since surgery/75 total. Good Luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
