Constant Grazing...is It A Problem?

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I was wondering if any of you had this problem - I am a month out now, and have lost 19 pounds but I feel like I need to eat constantly. I am trying to mostly eat healthy choices, like tuna, chicken, vegetables etc etc, but I do have the odd chocolate maybe three times a week. Is this a huge problem? I feel like my entire focus is on food, and that I am constantly hungry.

Anyone with some good advice for me?

Thanks!

I am also 1 month out and feel the same. Have been told by my NUT to have 6 small meals a day .... considering the time it takes me to eat it feels like my life is revolving around food! I barely go over 400-500 cal though and exercise on top of that I tend to burn most of that off. I don't think the odd chocolate is a problem as long as you a) exercise it off B) stick within in your daily calorie limit. No one is perfect. I think it is a slider food so be careful. I have lost 22lbs post op by the way.

you need to refocus and set out an eating plan. Write down and plan your meals: if you are doing 6 small meals then write them down and don't deviate from it. Listen to your body find other things to do besides eat. Be more in control of what you are eating and you should find that you will possibly even eat less. This early on I don't think you should be eating chocolate, you are in this to lose weight eating chocolate is an old/bad habit. Good luck.

Hi trainee! Aka NEWBIE :)

Welcome to Sleeveland :)

22 lbs in less that a month - good for you bud :)

Grazing is a "huge" problem - but you are a a sleever in training, NEWBIE, - but things will come together.

pre-wls - you/I ate during the day, ate this or that constantly - my stomach was big enough, no problem - to eat whenever :(

your tummy is now 85% smaller than it used to be. if you eat between meals like it sounds like you are doing (grazing) your tummy can't hold that much food.

I/we had this WLS as a desperate measure - wanting to help control our eating - but if you eat between meals, in my case that was kindof like eating all day - that is a "no no" post WLS

if you eat a few bites more than your tummy likes - it might discipline you by getting sick, or hot - just not feeling well

per your NUT - eat 6 small meals a day - if you think you are hungry?? could be head hunger, you don't want to resort to bad old habits

you don't want to do that anymore - your tummy can't handle it, and you shouldn't do it (graze) thats how you gain weight too

eating chocolate 3 times at week at one month out, i don't think so.......I understand its not often, but at this early time you shouldn't have)

after awhile you can eat "alittle" chocolate, just like you can eat anything else - but small portions, and you have to count in your calories total

repeating don't graze ever - even though it might be healthy choices, its too much for your tummy, and its a habit we "used" to do in the "old days" - that "helped" putting us in this "overweight" situation!!!

per your post you are getting very few calories in?? eating periodically during the day is not a good habit

little tough love never hurt anyone, did it???

still friends :mellow::)

good luck

Proudgrammy pretty much hit the nail on the head. Grazing throughout the day is not a good way to utilize the sleeve. The sleeve is useful only if you're using it to restrict the amount of food you can take in during your meals and then keeps you satiated longer. If you're "tricking" the sleeve by taking in more food only over a longer period of time then you're still getting high calories you're just eating all the time. Which is what you're noticing... you're eating constantly.

My surgeon has me on a normal 3 meals a day with a snack or 2 if necessary. Snacks are yogurt, cheese stick, beef Jerky, etc. Low cal high Protein things. chocolate doesn't fit in to that category. I can't find any chocolate to eat (even sugar free) that is under 50 calories per piece. Try replacing those chocolates with sugar free mints or hard candies like Werthers.

Like other posters have said, we're working to change the old habits. For me that included putting food in my mouth all day whenever I wanted. Now I eat 3 times a day like normal healthy people do, and I only eat during those times if I am hungry.

I know it's probably not what you wanted to hear, but our goal is to help each other be successful losers. We've gone to an extreme length to drop the weight so sometimes a little tough love is sobering.

I agree with proud grammy. Stop the grazing and stop eating chocolate.....Chocolate is your enemy! I would also highly recommend that you increase your Water intake. Sometimes when we don't get enough Fluid in, it is mimicked by hunger. So increase your water intake. If you struggle with water, mix it with some gatorade or crystalite. Avoid sugars at all cost. Sugar is addicting, I am addicted to sugar and now I have to detox to get it out of my system. That helps stop the cravings...... :)

Grazing is OK as long as you're not eating a bunch of junk. I graze constantly (9/25/2012 surgery date) and I have lost 40 pounds in that time. If you're on solids, keep fresh fruit around.

My doc told me last week that I need to have something in my stomach every 2-3 hours for the 1st four months or so.

If you're mindlessly eating, not good. If you're mindfully eating, that's good.

Hi guys,

Thanks for all the feedback here. I am not sure that I am grazing all day, I think eating every 2.5 hours feels like grazing - yesterday I was much stricter though, in sticking to the 2.5 hour rule, and I managed to drink much more Water, so I think it is definitely something to do with thirst. I also noticed on some other forums that the guys have been prescribed acid blockers, so I wrote to my doc and asked him to prescribe some for me. He said absolutely - so will be getting the prescription today. Will let you know how it goes. You guys are also so right about the chocolate - enough!!! No more!!

Thanks for the tough love guys - who else would give me all this great advice!?!

Mich

I eat slowly throughout the day so one meal blends into another. However, and this is important: I weigh and measure EVERYTHING that goes into my mouth and enter it on My Fitness Pal.

If I were just to eat whatever all day in whatever amount it would be a disaster in my case. For instance, did you know that just 1/4 cup of walnuts had 200 calories? I could eat that without even thinking about it.

Establish your meal and snack times - 5 - 6 daily, and don't eat between. We are conditioned to feel like it is some horrible fate to feel hunger. It isn't. We just aren't accustomed to it.

Hungry between meals/snacks? It's ok. Feel hungry. Desensitize yourself to it. Drink something. Get busy. Nothing bad is going to happen to you because you feel hunger.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
