How Does It Feel When You Swallow? 4 Days Out

Recommended Posts

I'm four days out from surgery and when I swallow I have this feeling like its all getting backed up in my esophagus and then it drains down into my tummy. It's uncomfortable, and I'm wondering if my hiatal hernia repair is the reason for this. Anyone else feel tender when they swallow small sips of Clear Liquids?

Your throat, esophagus, belly and pylori valve (and everything in between) is swollen and sensitive right now. If you take a 2 liter bottle of fluids, take off the cap and up end it. It's going to drain but not without air causes it to "glug". It's normal, so don't get upset.

Try smaller swallows, it just takes time, mine did that too, warmer fluids were easier as in room tempreture, cold seemed to make my stomach spasm. it will adventually go away. I used a sippy cup to gage how much to drink at a time, try small drinks.

This is the first time that I have heard of drinking from a sippy cup. It seems that it would be easier than drinking from a glass or bottle. My surgery date is Monday, Dec. 3 and I am looking for all of advice and helpful hints that I can get!

But isn't a sippy cup too close to a straw? I was told no carbonation, and no straws for the same reason. They said drinking from a straw allows you to swallow more air than normal sipping, and the air can bloat you and stretch your sleeve.

Try exhaling before you swallow, that helped me.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
