You really don't even realize it happens. They give you something to relax you and you're semi aware of being wheeled in to the OR and you're really not aware of anything else after that until you come out of it. Of course at that point I wanted them to put me back under because I hurt like hell, but you take what you can get :D

I've had numerous surgeries and in all cases, I'm talking or being talked to, or being wheeled down the hall and I'm out. The very next moment I'm waking up. It's never been a gradual process. Once I was told to count backward from 100. I got to 97 and they started calling my name. I thought, "What do you want? Just get this over." It was over. They were waking me up! :o For this surgery, they also gave me something to "relax" me before they put me out. I was so happy :P You won't have any problems!

Being put to sleep is scary for anybody. You are not in control and that is a scary thing. I do have to say though that anesthesiologists have had numerous years of training and know what they are doing to keep you safe.

You won't even know you went to sleep when you wake up!

Don't let this fear deter you from this decision that will change your whole life. Think about how many surgeries happen everyday and the percentage of problems. It very very low, something like 0.01%.

When the time comes, you'll be ready to get this done!

Tell them you've never been put out before. They'll help you through it.

I was sleeved almost 2 weeks ago. They wheeled me in and had me move to the operating table. I asked why ORs are so cold. (Go ahead and make small talk- it keeps your mind off things) while I was asking the nurse a few questions, the anesthesiologist was hooking me up (he sat behind me- they usually do). Next thing I knew - I was done. And even now, I don't remember that part much. I could swear I dreamt while out but they say you don't. Maybe it was a weird little hallucination on my part while waking up.

You'll do great. The anesthesiologist is your best friend. They do this all the time. You'll meet yours before surgery. Go ahead and tell yours that this is your first time out too.

I was more afraid of the anesthesia than the surgery so I understand. I made sure my surgeon knew my fears and he talked me through them. The anesthesiologist team was wonderful too. They gave me some of that "I don't care" in my IV before wheeling me to the OR and after that I only have random snap shots of being in the OR. Then like someone else said, they were waking me up. I felt like I had literally blinked.

They look at all those tests we take pre-op and make sure they are doing everything just right. You'll be fine hun!

I have had surgery twice where the surgeon put me under. Both times it went fine and the doctor's support team did everything to make sure I was as comfortable as possible. It is a very relaxing experience, but over in an instant. Coming out is a little like waking up slow ( which never happens to me). Before your eyes are open, the sounds of the recovery room start to become more and more audible, until yours eyes open slowly. You usually are not able to feel much because of the IV pain meds. I personally like the experience and must be the odd person out in that opinion. I put complete faith in the doctor and the team of medical professionals. Please be comfortable that the doctors are very good at what they do and will do everything to ensure your comfort.

I was nervous myself since I had never been under. Trust me, its like everyone's saying on here, before you even realize your getting sleepy you open your eyes and your post-op!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
