dexter got a reaction from Jamonique84 in Complications 8 years out and depressed!
I had my sleeve 8 years ago and have been battling severe GERD for two years and serious weight gain since my hysterectomy just last December.
Now, I am miserable and weak. 10-20 tums a day, unable to properly take my medications because I throw them up. Cannot eat because I throw it all up too. Just ordered some syntax iced tea and protein soups. I’m taking 80mg protonix daily and wake up choking on my bile bile at night.
My PCP dismissed me. Saw her PA and at no time did she even look down my throat.
Got a referral to a GI and they called to have a consult in a month! A consult! Only!
Called my old bariatric surgeon and he’s not in my insurance network and I can’t afford him. Called one in town and have an appointment on the 9th. But if it requires a revision, I don’t know if it’s covered on my insurance.
I’m losing hope. I feel like everyone else has since I’ve been dismissed at every turn.
My brain is fuzzy, my eyes are sunken. Work is hard. I pretend I’m fine and eat at company meetings then go quietly to the bathroom to throw everything up. I’m miserable.
I need an answer but no medical professionals seem to be in a hurry.

Those who’ve had revisions- how did you get your doctor to do something? How did you convey the urgency without sounding like a hypochondriac? It’s gotten so very bad and I’ve been begging someone to listen for two months now. I can’t keep going like this.

My hubby has a CPAP. To me, it's like white noise in the background. When his seals started to wear out, they started to make a high pitch whistle that made me nuts. Or if his mouth should get stuck in the open position, it sounds 'off' and wakes me. But! It's all so much better than snoring!!
My favorite thing to wake to is when the cat decides to sleep on the warm snore machine and inadvertently turns it off. Her name is Stash. So I hear:
    -snort snort- DANGIT STASH!
    I chuckle every time.

I'm not sleeved yet but I've been instructed to drink as if I were. I agree with the Sobe Life Zero. I don't feel left out at convenience stores.
I've become a lover of loose tea. Have my own special brewing pot and enjoy ordering and trying new types. It takes time to make and prepare so I make it at night. Just the little ritual seems to stave off the late night munchies for me.

Seems like the family members who are least supportive of me are husband's sisters. When we are all together, I'm the thin one! I think it's odd that the sisters of all people should understand WHY.
Or maybe they just hate me. The first Christmas with my husband, his family anonymously gave me a jar a mayo.
The people who have given me the most support are my friends who have had body issues the other way (too thin) or discriminated against for another reason (deaf, gay, female bodybuilder).
Sometimes family is really not the best support out there.

I've gotten lots of "well, you know what's best for you" comments. I know many are backhanded in nature, but I respond in my head with "Yes! I do know what's best for me!" these comments come from (surprise or not) very overweight family members. The most support has come from friends (twins) who are very thin & get accused of taking drugs or being anorexic. Also from friends who have been discriminated againt. My deaf friends, gay friends and even one who is a female bodybuilder.
People fascinate me. They really do.

Decided I was only hurting myself at a time I really need support. The road there is pretty trying. And even tougher with only a select few knowing. So I looked on my Facebook friend list, selected family and friends who really know me and updated my status. This is how I keep in touch daily with some of the people who may know me best.
I stated my intentions, what I need from those who support me and then what I don't need. And as of right now, I've got 12 more people supporting my decision to be sleeved than I did this morning. I even had one friend say he didn't like that I felt I needed surgery but that he supported me nonetheless. And I admire that.
I know some friends will delete me and maybe even some family members. And it will hurt. But not as much as feeling ashamed of my decision and needed to keep a secret. And definitely not as much as one day really needing their support and not having it.
Nope. I'm out and I'm proud. I'll be checking in to my sleep study on Saturday. I'll be 'liking' my surgeon's office. And I'll be announcing my surgery date as soon as I know it - all over Facebook.
I should weigh myself. Because right now I feel a ton lighter.

I'm so proud of you! There is no shame in choosing to have to have this surgery! This is the best decision I have ever made and I told everyone. Everyone was supportive and if not, I distanced myself from their negativity.

I have a moderately large purse I carry with me sometimes. It has tons of pockets and I can hide quite a variety of small bags of my "snacks." If I am going to one of those places that searches your bag, I have found that I can hide snacks in a makeup bag under the tampons! No security guard EVER searches through those!!!

I needed to find this thread. I'm in the same boat. I just posted similar frustrations. I feel like this is a cruel hazing to see how much the fat girl can take before she breaks. I've waddled through every hoop thrown in front of me and still feel at the beginning. I still don't have a tentative date. Did sleep study (which triggered a panic attack), lab work. Today found out I need another sleep study for cpap. Insurance may not pay for the extra things that I would pay for normal people because my billing has a big OBESE word stamped on it. Also found out today psych eval not covered because it is connected to obesity. I feel punished because I'm fat.
Is all this just to thin the heard? Has anyone jumped through all the hoops to have a surgeon say we changed our mind and you don't get your brass ring?
I hate we are in the same boat but it is nice to know we are not so alone.

Well, I'm a mother of 2 (6 and 2.5) and a wife. My husband has always been very supportive of me, and things I wanted to do. But he was quite hesitant of me having this surgery. We actually fought pretty bad about it once. He wanted to know WHY I wanted the surgery. He never specifically told me it was the easy way out, but he did say that that's what people (who don't research) tend to think.
After that I fight I thought long and hard about all the reasons WHY I wanted to have this surgery. I'd researched this procedure for over 3 years. I knew the ins and outs of it. I was comfortable with my decision to have it. So I wrote him a long letter explaining every detail of what I felt about myself without surgery, the reasons for the surgery, why I wanted to do the surgery, what I felt like my girls would learn from it, what I expected out of myself afterwards, and that I hoped he would still support me in my decision. It was about a 4 page letter by the end of it.
In the end - I came to realize that this surgery was about ME. No one else. And I had NEVER made anything just about ME. Everyone else always came first. And that was something that was a little eye opening for me (and I think for him).
I had surgery a week ago. He took the week off and stayed home with our girls while I was in the hospital (ended up staying an extra night). Today was his first day back at work, and he has checked on me throughout the day. After giving him that letter, he understood they reasons why, and he has been completely supportive ever since.
Sit down and really talk with him about how you feel. And hear how he feels and what he has to say. But in the end, it's your body and your decision.

But as for the topic of this post- I am glad he did a show for those of us with more than 15 pounds to lose. I'm not a fan of his because he seems to promote fads most of the time. Also, if we followed every weight loss tip he had, we would be taking thousands of $ in supplements a month and possibly even contradicting ourselves on a daily basis and maybe doing more harm than good.

This is an older quote from Dr. Oz. He's not my fave either, but i love this quote:

So you're a proponent? (of WLS)

"Yes. Listen, if you're one hundred pounds overweight at age fifty, you have the same mortality rate as if you have a solid cancer. Would you operate for cancer? Yeah. So if you cannot lose that weight, get one of these procedures. You have to do it with counseling and full awareness of what you're doing, of course. But if you get people to start losing 5% of their excess body weight, you're really taking a big whack out of the two-thirds of Americans who are overweight or obese right now."

Unfortunately, people will always have something dumb to say. I told a friend I was wanting to lose weight. Their advice was to stop eating. Yeah, okay. Then I told a friend I was contemplating WLS. Then I was told that a friend of his sister's friend's uncle's mistress had it and it didn't work. (face palm). At the seminar I just went to, the guy giving testimony said when he started to lose weight, his office began whispering he may have cancer.
So, I think there will always be a stupid statement out there. But I agree with the above comment that shutting up that mean little bully in our head will be the sweetest reward.

Yep. I had a very obese dad who died of colon cancer at age 49. I was 3 months pregnant with my first child. I don't want that to happen again.
Also, due to gaining weight and having giant babies, I had a severely bad back. I used to have days when my hubby would set me up with baby bottles on the bottom shelf of the fridge and diapers and wipes on the floor so I could take care of the kids without lifting them or myself. These were not proud days. It ended in 12 years of serious back pain then emergency back surgery after I lost the ability to void. I was a day away from straight cathing for life and 2 away from a wheelchair. I was in pain and missed out on lots of things my kids did due to pain and stubbornness, I'll be darned if I do it again. If I don't act, I'll be back in pain and they may not get their mom back again.
I missed out on ME. I want me back. I want to run! I want to live!
WLS will help and be the tool to get me back. I truly believe it.
