Personal Question About The Surgery?

Recommended Posts

If you are nervous about it, and the nurses try to cath you before surgery, just ask them to wait until you're knocked out. They usually don't mind waiting, and you have no discomfort that way.

Also, don't worry about waking during surgery. I've had two C-sections, and I was awake for both. There's a curtain so you can't see the actual incisions, so you won't see the "holes" in your body even if you do wake up.

They did the insert and the removal while I was snoozing. Never felt a thing. Although, my doctor recently mentioned he may stop requiring it because of complications, urinary infections would be my guess.

Even if you do have a cathether, it's no big deal. I've had one many times and it was a blessing to not have to get out of bed and go to the bathroom when it was so painful to get up or when you can't get a nurse to come in and help you get up. That won't be the situation with the lapband, of course, but just wanted to tell you, for future reference, there are things much worse in hospitals than a cathether.

My surgery was only 30 minutes. Dr. Spiegel did not use a catheter on me, thank goodness! I walked to the bathroom after my surgery.

My surgery was yesterday afternoon.

I don't believe I had a catheter.. if I did it want in & out while I was under.

I left my panties on tho and they were still in place when I woke up..

I did get a Valium beforehand and found it very hard to wake up. I hate that! I can't rest well in the hospital and so wanted to be free to come home asap. But I was so groggy that I had to stay there a good 2 hours longer.

I was up and walking early tho and had no trouble with peeing.

If I ever had to go under again.. I think I'll refuse the Valium. I'd never had one before and really don't like struggling to wake after surgery.

My only real complaint about yesterday's surgery was how sore & dry my throat & mouth were. I knew that I needed to be able to drink before being discharged but my throat felt totally gummed shut. And I couldn't clear it cuz that jiggled my belly and hurt the 6 incisions. I did get real brave and had a sip before my 2 hours were up and even ate 1/2 the broth and 1/4 of the Jello on my dinner tray. And I finished the whole carafe of Water.

So much to my delight my surgeon okayed my discharge and got to come home and really sleep in my own bed with my own pillows and my beloved.

And now my new life starts!!!

Love & Hugs

My husband and I were banded on the 12th. Our surgeon required caths. We both got them in and taken out why we were under. No problems.

No catheter for this surgery, as it's so short. I had one when I was birthing my son, it was put in once the epidural had kicked in, and not taken out until it had worn off. No pain, just a weird feeling as it was removed.

They are needed for longer anaesthetics because the drugs relax all your muscles so that you can't pee. As your body continually produces urine, not being able to pass it while under an anaesthetic causes it to back up into your kidneys, which is very dangerous.

I had one put in once i was under the anesthesia they took it out the next morning when I was fully able to get up and walk around and go to the bathroom on my own, it was not painful when they took it out at all.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
