Thanks so much for the feedback i had some oatmeal from McDonald's and it was sooo good

I would watch out for anything from a fast food place. If you look up the nutritional info it has a crap-ton of sugar: http://www.mcdonalds.com/us/en/food/product_nutrition.breakfast.711.fruit-maple-oatmeal-.html

I make a pot of 1/2 steel cut oats, 1/2 textured vegetable Protein. I add some splenda to it and stick it in the fridge and eat it throughout the week. After heated up, I either add some greek yogurt (and some sugar free Torani syrup) or some vanilla Protein Powder to it. If i'm feeling a little backed up, a sprinkle of flax seeds get tossed in.

I am going to add oatmeal toy diet beginning next week and add egg whites to it.

My doctor wants my BP to go below 120/90. My BP average was 145/100 before the weight loss. Oatmeal helps with cholesterol and BP.

I'm 4 months post op and I think I can handle 1/3 cup or less of oatmeal and 1 egg white per day.

Here is a recipe I found yesterday. It was pretty tasty. I think cooking the oats with the cinnamon helped a lot. I didn't do the milk or the honey but did add about a teaspoon of brown sugar. Probably less than that. I also added a teaspoon of flax seed to each serving I made. I'm sure you could also add Protein powder :)

You can order it without all of those add ins. Just ask for no sweetener and no cream.

On my heavy workout days, i have steel-cut oats for Breakfast. I like the texture better than rolled or instant oats, and they have a better glycemic index (slow carb digestion). I don't add sweetener, use a little dried fruit, non-fat milk, and unflavored Protein Powder. It comes up to about 250 calories, 12 grams of Protein, and keeps me full for hours. Gives me plenty of energy for my workout, too. Then i make sure to eat high-protein, low carb the rest of the day.

When I do the steel cut oats alone I soak them over night- In the crock pot however it depends on how good yours is- Mine cooks rather quicly so low for 6-7 hours gets good consistancy...

2 cups steel cut oats

2 cups coconut or almond or soy( I dont like soy) milk

3 1/2 cups of Water

2 cinnamon sticks (or powdered cinnamon to taste)

Nutmeg and or all spice and or apple pie spice to your taste

1/4 tsp sea salt

Peaches- I used real peaches when they are in season but you can also use 1lb of frozen peaches.. (you can also add in any other frozen berry fruit or pineapple, raisins, whatever you'd like) if the fruit is not frozen you may just wnat to add it in the end.

Spray crock pot with non-stik cooking spray.Combine all ingredients and add sweetner if you need to (sweet and low, truvia etc)

To add some flavor and sweetner, I use a coffee cremer that is french vanilla coconut milk. It adds more vanilla flavor and sweetnes it automatically.

I can only eat about less than 1/2 cup over about a 1 hour time frame so obviously this lasts for at least a week but when I make it I also variate the fruit according to season... It's yummy- ENJOY!!!

Will somebody explain to me the difference between steel cut and rolled oats?

Steal cut oats look like little nubbins and hold their texture really well while you cook/reheat them. Rolled oats are "typical" oatmeal. They take the oats and roll them between heavy rollers to flatten them out, they cook faster but get soggy and stuff.

What size crock pot do you use? I want to purchase a smaller one for cooking my dinners and Soups and things... my 6quart crock pot may be to big for this recipe.

I too like oatmeal especially the steel cut oats, but read recently a recommendation to only have a couple of servings a week after WLS. I cook a quarter cup which cooks into a full cup with cinnamon, artificial sweetner and a little lowfat milk.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
