Taking Small Sips Gives Me Gas, How Do I Fix This?

Recommended Posts

I'm still pre-op, but am taking the advice of practicing post-op habits now. I'm using smaller plates (but not smaller utensils less), not drinking within 30m of or during meals, and I'm trying to practice taking smaller sips of drinks.

The problem is, that I've always been a chugger. Honestly, more than missing food, I think I'll miss chugging or gulping (water, I don't drink anything else but Protein shakes). I've been trying to get in the habit of sipping, but I find that it makes me quite gassy, whereas chugging never has. Has anyone else had this problem? And post-op former chuggers out there have some advice?

I haven't seen anything like this posted on the forums, so I'm wondering if other people just don't have this problem?

yea, you definitely need to re-read and strictly follow your guidelines, believe me once u get surgery and you TRY to gulp your Water down, it will hurt! Just a quick and fun tip I did: after surgery I got a small spoon, and drank water from the spoon. That's how much you'll be able to tolerate after surgery. up until you're about 6-7 weeks post op!

best wishes!!

I'm only 2 1/2 weeks out from surgery but taking big gulps of Fluid is the one thing I really miss so I can relate! As vonego82 says, once you've had surgery it won't be a problem, you will only be able to drink little bits at a time, believe me! the smallest amount of food makes me burp - but a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do! I know I'm still a greenhorn but the best comment I could make at the moment is to follow the guidelines BUT remember that everyone is different. For example, I'm at the "mushy food" stage and have decided to forego meat for now as it just doesn't sit well in my stomach at the moment - so I eat the foods that do and supplement it with other Protein foods (yoghurt etc) and then Protein Powder mixed into fresh fruit/vege juice (watching how much juice you have as it can be high calorie). You will find your own comfort space so trust your instincts.

Already I know that I've done the right thing so I wish you well!

regards

I'm 9 days post op and I drink my liquids like before surgery. I also drink my shake with a straw with no problems whatsoever! :)

Everyone is very different though.

thanks for the responses! I'm sure it will work itself out when I have surgery, but this practicing is kinda driving me nuts! ;)

I had to learn the difference between sipping and slurping. For me slurping has that slurp noise and that is where too much air was getting in the sleeve. Once I figured that out I was fine!!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
