I have actually done this for a long time and see nothing wrong with it. I am not bolimic or anorexic. Sometimes need to feel the food in my mouth and get the taste to satisfiy the craving. I starting doing this years ago when I was on the many "diets" I had done over the years. I have keep this "tool" to help me with my journey and have not found it to be of any problem. It has helped me many times to control the desire to eat something I know I shouldn't.

I thought I was the only one who did this. I had a bad day and bought some sugar free red vines. My mouth was full and I felt really guilty. Out the car window they went ewww.

I used to do this when I was on a liquid diet about 20 years ago. When I mentioned I might do it now, she informed me that its called having an EATING DISORDER! Whatever...

I licked Doritos during my 2nd week post op but didn't chew them. I needed the taste of something that wasn't a Protein shake.

But I just read a book called "The First Twenty Minutes". In it, they talk about a study where 3 groups of test subjects rode exercise bikes for a while. One group was allowed to swish flavored Water but could not swallow. The flavored water had zero calories. One group swished unflavored plain Water. The last group swished a sports drink containing dextrose and fructose...in other words, sugar, so it had calories. None of the riders swallowed anything. But the group that swished the sports drink with sugar rode farther with less effort. In other words, they were somehow ingesting some of the fuel (sugar) from the drink even though they didn't swallow. So be aware that "some" of what you're chewing is not being spit out, especially sugar.

It is an eating disorder. Someone else on the forum posted on it before. I believe she said it was call "cupping". You all might google it to see if that is right. However, it is an eating disorder. No judgment here, just a fact...K

I agree it would be a eating disorder if you made a habit of it. and I also agree you will get

"some" slight amount of sugars from the food in the mouth even if you don't swallow it, but if a person does it only rarely, I don't think you are going to do any real harm. Just don't make a habit of it. If you make a habit of it then you may have a problem. Like I said I've done it over the years on all kinds of diets but have never used it excessively. If I do it once every couple weeks that is a lot. I only do it when I have a really hard time with a craving. This is only my personal view and I am not advicating for anyone else to do it. I actually told my pcp doctor about it and he said as long as I didn't do it often he didn't see any real harm it in. Each person's situation is different so I would suggest you talk to your doctor or nut if you think it is a problem and get an opinion from the professional..

I did it about 10 days post-op with baked ziti. The only thing I can say is I felt really bad about putting it in my mouth in the first place, then I felt gross spitting it out, then I was relieved I didn't swallow. I feel like it was one step away from eating then purging, something I did in the past whenever I lost weight and ate something I shouldn't. It scared me because the guilt afterwards felt the same. Self control is sooooo hard! I can't say I won't do it again, however spitting it out, regardless of any oral sugar absorption is better than eating more than a bite and purging! Yes, I do have an eating disorder! How else did I get to almost 300 pounds? My sleeve is the tool I need to lose the weight once and for all. But it is just a tool and this is part of the journey too.

I have done it. I think it is head hunger because i am not hungry at all. I have only done it a couple of times and feel like i am cheating after doing it. I know its an eating disorder if i do it on a regular basis. Goodness knows i am not perfect in this journey and really don't see anything wrong with it.

I'm amazed and relieved to know being two weeks post op that I'm not the only 1 that has done it!!! I did it with Doritos and I didn't feel bad after doing it either and for those who say its a disorder my response is....whatever...I had a moment and it happened only once I'm sure it will happen again but I see nothing wrong with it as long it's not something that's being done on the regular....I've lost a total of 40lbs so far and my surgery date was October 16 and emergency surgery October 19 and feeling really Good!!! Have a great day everybody!!!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
