28 Yr Old Newbie From Charlotte, Nc

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

My name is Melissa and I am 28yrs old from Charlotte, NC. This is all brand new to me. I don't even really know where to start. I don't know if I should talk about myself or the self that pertains to my weight. I guess I will start with the weight part. I think back to my first memory ever in life. I wonder if there was ever a time I could remember not being overweight. I honestly can't think of a time. All of my life my weight has been a factor in some way or another. I remembered being picked on as a child because of my weight. I remember always comparing myself to my classmates. Not feeling pretty enough. This continued all through high school and through my young adulthood.

When I heard about Bariatric surgery I thought that people who turned to that were weak and were taking the easy way out. Surgery was never in my cards. I just couldn't see myself going through with it. There were a couple of significant turning points in my life that changed my mind. One of them was my mother, about 4 years ago she had the LapBand Surgery. She has lost about 80 pounds and all of her former health problems are completely gone. It has been a real struggle for her and I am so proud of her. However, I always knew that the lapband wasn't for me. At times, I watched my mom choke on food and have to throw up from discomfort. That is not the kind of life that I want. The second turning point has been watching my grandmother deteriorate. She is 67yrs old and has so many health problems. Diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, neuropathy, arthritis and the list goes on and on. In the past 3yrs she has had 3 heart attacks and 4 stints in her heart. She is so young and it pains me to see all the health problems she is dealing with.

I CAN'T START MY 30'S BEING OVERWEIGHT... I have stopped and started so many diets that I have lost count. Atkins, Weight Watchers, 3-day diet, Lemonade Diet, Soup Diet, HCG shots and appetite suppressants. The results are always the same. I gain and lose the same 30 pounds. I realize now that I need additional help. I need a jump start and I feel like having this surgery will give me that. I am looking for advise and support. I want to also be an encouragement to anyone that I can. I need all the friends I can get in this journey. Especially ones who understand what I am about to face.

Welcome Melissa! You came to the right place for support and guidance, this site has been a godsend for me! I can honestly say this is one of the best decisions I have ever made. I too was scared, confused etc but I was tired of being sick and tired. I wanted to be there for my family and this surgery is making that possible. I am down 85 lbs, 20 to go and I feel fantastic. I have no health issues anymore, blood pressure is perfect, cholesterol is right where it needs to be etc. I had absolutely no issues with my surgery, I was ready to go back to work in a week but Doc made me take 3. I tell everyone who asks me what I did and how much it has changed my life. Best of luck to you on your journey, I believe you will not be disappointed. Keep us posted! Hugs!

Kimberly,

Thank you so much for the warm welcome. You have lost 80 pounds in 8 months!! WOW!! That is amazing!! I honestly can't wait to have surgery. Unfortunately I won't see surgery until about 6 months from now because I have to be on a monitored nutritional program. But I am feeling great because I know that only good things are in store from here on out. I look forward to having an update for you.

Melissa your story sounds so much like mine! All my life I have been overweight and never truly comfortable with myself. You could never tell that weight was a problem for me because I never portrayed to have low confidence/ self esteem. Several years ago I went to a consultation for getting the lapband, but could not fathom having a foreign object in my body forever. So surgery was placed in the back of my mind as I continued the cycle of dieting, losing weight, than regaining. It was recently while talking to my ex-roommate. She told me that she was going to have a wls to lose weight. I dove into wls again and came across this site, self-pay surgery in MX, and have finally decided that this is what I need.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
