Please answer re: When to Drink

Recommended Posts

I drink right before eating all the time. I don't understand the logic--if there is any--behind not drinking a half-hour before eating.

And Michelle, not to worry!! The only reason we're told not to drink with our meals is that it can make us feel hungry again faster. It's not unsafe or anything. If you're happy with your progress and don't feel like it's compromising your goals, there's nothing wrong with drinking while you eat.

I'm with Donali. Enough already with the other board. (Though I will say I got a little frisson of glee when I saw Jessie's post. :( )

I'm not sure what a frisson is, but it sounds like a good thing. You people use big words. I like that.

Dr. Carmen said not to drink Water with meals because:

1. There's not enough room in the pouch for food and liquid;

2. You'll stretch your pouch/stoma;

2. liquid pushes the food through the stoma faster, so you're hungrier sooner.

Then again, Dr. Carmen promised emergency 24 hour phone service and said my infected port was normal.

Hi Kim, first time for me to see your face & name. Hi again!

I'm exactly like you - it takes an hour to feel completely full. I ate 4 hours ago and feel like I just downed a twelve-incher from Subway. I try to have a cup of warm herbal tea at night so the food goes down before bed. And I'm afraid to stretch my pouch, too, although I probably already have.

I'm eating a fraction of what I used to eat. I used to eat 2 man sized plates, then top the night off with 3 hours of goodies. Now I eat for about 20 minutes. I always know I need to stop, but I feel cheated cuz I barely ate anything. I'm guilty of eating about 4-5 small bites past the point where I feel fullness.. then again, I don't know the difference between fullness and other stuff. I had a hiatal hernia before my surgery, which meant my food always felt trapped in my sternum, inbetween my breasts only lower. Being full from the band feels similar - you don't get full in your belly, but in a new higher place (am I right?)

Exactly! You will never feel that 'thanksgiving' full again, unless you are eating things that go around the band, like Desserts. The 'full' you feel is farther up, into the esophagus.

Very good!

Then Leatha, I can explain to everyone what a hiatal hernia feels like. It feels like a lap band. Only it hurts. What's really strange about my funny little band is that even though I'm eating a few bites past being full, I've walked past a huge cannister of Cookies for over a week. Someone brought them to work, and I haven't even smelled one. How can that be? And so far I've been able to avoid all candy. And I've only had 1/2 a french fry, which I spit out (2 cups of ketchup with DaddyMackSize fries were a staple.) No candy in 2 months? Except the neighbor kids brought me a huge sucker from Disneyland. I've licked at it a few nights, but it's still over a foot long. And 2 Tic-Tacs. Oh, and I shared a dessert last month. Other than that, at least I have some of my long-lost willpower back... for today, anyway!

Congratulations!! To me, the best part of the band is not having that guilt of eating everything that isn't nailed down. At night, when I go to bed. I go to bed feeling so much better, not stuffed and miserable and guilty for what I'd eaten.

I know all too well about hiatal hernia's, too. Often, a band surgeon will fix them.

When I woke up, I asked my band surgeon if he repaired my awful hernia. He said, "you don't have it any more." But his English suffers along with a bad lisp, so till this day, I don't understand what happened to it even tho Donali tried to explain it. She shoulda used baby talk like "he shoved that tube thingy down the floppy round part." But I think he just pushed it down then put the band on top of it to hold it down????? Just my guess.

You just reminded me of how sick I was every night... I'd be up 10 times taking antacids and eating chaulk, or just eating more crap to push down the stuff that wouldn't go down. Yes, I believe my band loves me a little!

I drink right up to my meal, during my meal, and after my meal..... bad girl, i know...... but I don't actually drink, I just sip... I may not get but half of a cup, (one like is in the bathroom to rinse your mouth) during the whole meal. To easc his own I say. It just makes me feel better to have a tiny sip. HOWEVER!!!!! I recently read something that is making me re-think and try harder not to drink much. I read that..... " If you drink during meals (banded or not) that the Water dilutes the stomach acid that breaks down the food and the food will not be used by the body as well as it would have if you "did not" drink with your meal. Makes sense to me. I remember when I was younger and really dumb and had my first son. I fed him baby food from the jar and he would not eat it all so I put it in the fridge. When I would open it back up to feed the next time, it would not be solid as before, but gross and runny and I would have to throw it away. I was dipping the spoon back into the food after putting it in his mouth. Therefore the saliva from the spoon was going into the untouched food and breaking it down. If we drink with our meals, more food will "not" be broken down and used, and more will remain solid and turn to fat instead of being used by the body as fuel. Now if I am wrong, forgive me, but since I read this, I am trying harder to "not drink". Do as you wish. It is your journey. I did not drink with meals faithfully at first. Then I crept into the sipping thing. I have noticed lately that my food will go down more and I can eat more if I do sip. Good or bad to drink?..... I don't know...but I have lost 95 lbs. I have lost much slower than most also.

Oh yeah, by the way, I cannot eat lettuce at all.... but my daughter can...I love eggs, but she can't get them down..... go figure... we are all different.

Thanks, Terry. I didn't drink with meals before being banded because my gastroenterolgist suggested not to. I had major digestive problems before my band, and my doc agreed with your statement that stomach acids have an easier time breaking down food without all the Water.

I don't drink for a couple hours after eating because if I do, I get hungry later. If I get really thirsty, I'll have a popsickle. I keep a tub of mixed pops in the freezer - 2 boxes of sugar free with one box regular. You never know what you'll get, so if you get a real one it's a nice treat.

Drinking before meals was my problem because I've been missing out on all the fun with my friends. We have lots of parties and barbeques. We'll drink for a few hours before cooking. Some days I sip Bloody Marys, others plain iced tea or water. But when everyone starts eating, I've been sitting there drooling while waiting for my 1/2 hour to pass. Then I end up eating alone later.

After reading all these posts, I'll drink till my first bite. That's a big load off my shoulders. Thanks all!

I didn't think that pic was really you because it looks like a young Ellen Barkin? Brittney? Who is that?

Go drink some water! I fill up 2 huge containers of Water in the morning. I have to finish 1 of them or I don't get lunch. That's my rule, and I gotta stick to it!

Now that I am as far out as I am, I realize that a lot of the stuff we try to do is not necessary. We put extra pressure on our selves because we are afraid that one more time, we will fail and if you girls are like me, that is too much to handle. But whether we drink, or don't drink, or when we do or don't do it..... will not make us fail. Water is the most important thing we can put in our body. It hydrates every organ we have, and helps flush the toxins out of them. It even gives our skin a more youthful appearance. So, DRINK... Anytime you want. However, When eating, try to sip instead of drink. That way you can do what everyone else is doing and not feel you have to be different. I have a tape that says, "The best exercise in the whole world is.................one you will do" Wow. How smart is that. So in my humble opinion, the best diet, or I hate that word so I will say "The best Way to eat and live" is one that you can do and be happy at it. Because if it is a struggle, I have found that I will not stay with it. It isn't something "I will do". I will for a while, and then I feel like I am not living or not getting to be normal. So I incorporate "diet" for a lack of a better word, with a non-diet world. Kinda like the mixed popscicle thing..... I really like that, by the way, and that way we get to lose weight, and still have a normal life. I freak out and eat 6 Cookies, or real ice cream, cake or whatever. And I may do it for a week. Not Good ! But..........Then somebody will see me and say, Wow, Terry, you really have lost a lot of weight and I start realizing that the food I just binged on really wasn't as satifying as that one compliment was, or as satisfying as the blood work I just had that was awesome instead of being so bad they are worried about me. So, unfortunately, we are still going to do bad, but there will be something to shake us back into reality and say, You can have a cookie, but not a bag of them, or a piece of cake , but not 3 pieces. So this is beginning to sound like a lecture, so I will stop.

But just do what is comfortable for you......... And at some point, you may decide that the water at a meal is not that important after all and realize you can do whatever you really want to, one way or the other.:laugh :(:D

Terry, you hit my nail directly on my head. What works for some, doesn't work for others. Other people are able to stick to counting calories or measuring their food. I've been on Weight Watchers too many times, and the last time I mentally cracked up. I was weighing my dinner and started crying. Hubby came to see what was wrong, and I was soon in full-blown hysterics, throwing the scale away. I sought counseling because I simply cannot weigh or measure any more - after 30 years of counting, figuring, analyzing labels, fretting, etc., I just lost my will to "diet" and I don't ever want it back. That's why I got the band.

Now that I'm banded, I actually crave healthy foods - gotta have chicken and tuna.. must have. Somehow the bad stuff isn't as hard to pass up (thanks, band!) If I decided to have a cookie, my old addiction might come right back and I'd eat the entire batch. Right now it works for me to avoid all those goodies except for special occasions. There's been a giant size tin of Cookies here for 2 weeks, but I walk right by them cause their store-bought. I'm not wasting my time on store bought crap when I know the cookie lady comes once a month with warm home baked ones! So I'll wait till then.

I was given a piece of birthday cake but for the first time noticed how sweet and greasy it was. I could have eaten it, but I just licked at the fork. I'm trying to learn how to think like a skinny person, like, "that's so gross because it's too sweet." It ain't easy, but I'm trying to learn it!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
