Has Anyone Experienced Memory Loss?

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I'm new to this board so please forgive me if this has already been discussed. Has anyone experienced memory loss or problems with word recall post-surgery? If you have, could you please indicate time since sleeved.

Thank you.

Not to make fun but my memory had already gotten so bad pre op i remembered hardly anything short term. It did scare me that post op it would be worse. But so far mine has been a pretty consistent bad.

Well actually only 3 weeks so it may still happen. Lol well I started reading different posts concerning memory loss and the sleeve. And it really worried me but I actually contribute it maybe due to Vitamin deficiency from when a person is first sleeved they struggle to get enough and also the huge calorie carb reduction as well.

the anesthesia will make your brain like swiss cheese. i felt like i just couldn't just hold on to anything. my husband would ask me to do something and i would forget he ever asked. it gets better. i am a month out and it is definitely better. but in the first couple weeks? WRITE STUFF DOWN.

I find that with every surgery I have had, I lose pieces of my memories. Usually some old memories of friends and when my kids were little. I find this upsetting, cause I have lost some memories of an old dear friend that past away several years ago. People say hey remember when we did this or that and I do not remember. :-( Hopefully no more surgeries!! I was sleeved Aug 31st.

Definitely the anesthesia will do this to you. It sits in your adipose tissue and metabolizes slowly out. Takes a few weeks before your head comes out of the clouds

Yes, yes, yes! I thought I was losing my mind, or in early stage Alzheimer's! I have to right everything down now on a calendar so I don't forget. It has gotten better, but still not as good as I was pre surgery. Still, I love my sleeve and am happy I did this for me!

I must have quit producing grehlin years before I had surgury. :) come to think of it I may have been born without it.

I had initially planned to go back to work after 1 week. Due to weakness, I could only work half days. But my memory was so bad I really wasn't much help. I even had trouble recalling coworkers names. I couldn't even think straight. Everything went back to normal probably about a month out.

Thank you all! These responses are all very helpful! I am not sleeved yet, but I'm trying to determine if anyone can identify long term memory loss. I know everyone is different and this surgery affects each one differently, but I'm specifically looking for older sleevers (those who have had the sleeve several months or years) who are past the initial foggyness from anestesia or lower carb intake.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
