This Pain Is Bad...

Recommended Posts

I have severe pain on my left side near an incision site. My surgeon told me pain is normal there because that site took a lot of abuse when he pulled my stomach through it. It just keeps getting worse but I am weaning myself off my pain meds. It feels like a burning, tearing pain when I lean, bend or sometimes just walking triggers it. Can anyone relate? When will it subside?

I had the same thing, at almost two weeks out, thought I tore something. Had my follow up with surgeon and he said the same thing, that the area was the largest/deepest incision going through multiple layers, he asked that I rest more and take it easy, use the pain meds, and that helped, after a few days, I started feeling better and the pain went away and did not return.

I had the same thing and my surgeon's office told me to take it easy and to not over do it. It finally went away about week 6. They also told me to wear my binder to support my stomach which helped also. :)

Thank you guys. I just needed some reassurance. You've made me feel much better. Think I'll stick with the pain meds a bit longer! :-)

I went for a walk last night 1 mil and I tell you I thought I was going to drop dead pain in the side. So I understand what you might be talking about.

I got a trigger point injection around my incision about 2 weeks after surgery cuz i couldn't take the pain. Pain meds didn't touch the pain.

The hospital gave me an abdominal binder. But I'm sure you could find them on the internet like ebay or Amazon. :)

The binder is a great idea - where did you get it? Do they give you one in the hospital?

I am an L&D nurse so I got one from work. As the above poster said, you can get a most drug stores. It really helped me alot....

I, too, am a nurse, and could have used a binder for my 3 c-sections but never got one. I splinted using my hands and know it helps. I will not be leaving the hospital without my binder!

Yep, I used the same kind that our sections are given...I am actually going to suggest it to my surgeon when I go back for my 3 month check up that he perscribes them for his patients...It helped me tremendously. I would splint my side when getting out of bed and at work just for a little extra support...

I have pain in the same spot-I never know what will trigger it. That incision spot also appears indented sometimes, sometimes flat. I tried to get out of bed this morning and this white hot poker pain shot through me- I thought I tore something , or would die! I'm a week postop and still taking pain meds around the clock & wearing my binder, I am so tired of this pain!! What did you do for relief?

The binder is great, but getting up the correct way after abdominal surgery is also very important. Don't sit up like you're doing a sit-up. Roll onto your side, hang your legs over the side of the bed, then push up with your arms. You can also apply extra support over the incision using one of your hands - flat palmed pressing lightly against your painful area. This reduces the pulling/stretching of the wounds.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
